Help! Baby’s tummy bigger than everything else?

Hi all!
Had a 16 week scan today as previous scan couldn’t visualise stomach and brain however, the scan shows that the head circumference and femur length are normal but the abdominal circumference is a lot bigger! (Will attach photo of the notes)
Any ideas what this could be? I’m 16 weeks and 3 days! Should I worry?

Didn't want to read and run.

I'm sure everything will be perfect OP.. try not to worry..

I'm 16+2 Flowers

Foodylicious · 28/09/2018 16:22

Did they not go through it with you after the scan?
Do you have another one booked for 20 weeks?

Firsttimetobe2019 · 28/09/2018 16:29

I have to wait to receive the letter for my 20 week scan so that will be end of October - beginning of November time!
The lady who did the scan didn’t say anything was an issue, it wasn’t until I read the notes in the car that I saw!
Hoping everything’s ok! I googled (I know I shouldn’t) I could be baby’s getting too much sugar or i could have diabetes!?

I'm pretty sure mine were like that. I can't remember the details now (he's 14 months now) but his abdominal measurement was huge like yours, while one of the others was slightly higher than average and the other was slightly lower. He's absolutely fine, it was not an issue in the slightest.

At his 8m check his head was off the chart enormous, his weight was below average and he was taller than average.

ilooovechristmas · 28/09/2018 17:00

If there is ever a problem with size on a scan or anything else to worry about on a scan they ask you to wait and you will see a midwife or consultant who ever is available and alway schedule a scan for 1-2 weeks after so I'm guessing it's fine x

Stephisaur · 28/09/2018 17:08

My baby has a big belly too. If it’s still big at 20 weeks they might refer you for a GTT, but it’s not always down to that.

We’ve established that my baby is just fat 😂

As above, I’d they are at all concerned then they will tell you, so try not to panic xx

Hi OP, I've had this as well, at my 20 week scan my baby had head measurement on 27th percentile femur (leg) on 69th percentile and tummy on 91st percentile! So small head and big stomach! I asked to speak to the senior sonographer and she said it's fine, all still within normal range, and they don't worry too much about big stomach measurements anyway. She also said it can be that in certain positions baby;s tummy is scrunched up. My consultant also saw the results and said it's fine, if shes' still got a big stomach at 28 weeks they may send me for the gestational diabetes test but that the measurements often even out as the weeks go on.

Try not to worry, the scans are notorious for being not very accurate and all measurements should be taken with a pinch of salt. I have read so many threads where baby goes from being on 3rd percentile one week to 50+ a few weeks later, or vice versa.

SpottingTheZebras · 28/09/2018 17:49

You’ll probably be asked to do a GTT. My DC’s abdominal measurement was off the charts but I didn’t have GD; just a baby with a big tummy.

SuperVeggie · 28/09/2018 17:49

PS. consultant also said it's better for them to be worrying about baby being big rather than small!

Firsttimetobe2019 · 28/09/2018 23:17

So they’ll possibly reschedule me for another scan?
Thank god for that - the scanner lady hardly communicated with me and when she did I had to ask her to repeat as she had a thick accent but i did message midwife and she said she’ll just see me at my 20 week appointment unless I hear otherwise!
When she was scanning she did repeat the mesurement a good 10 times and they have the measurement appear along side the estimated age of baby and at one point it came up at 19 weeks and I thought oh no! But after a few tries it dropped to 17!
Hopefully I receive a letter soon or I just chose to stop over thinking!
Thankyou all, I feel a little better hearing from you all x

I've got a chubby baby too. I'm 31 weeks and had a growth scan this week, I noticed on the print out the same as you while I was waiting to see midwife. I asked midwife and she said it's just variations in babies just like you get variations in adults, so I said "so I've just got a chubby baby then?" And she said "yep!"

Try not to worry.

le42 · 30/09/2018 15:53

Hi - I had this too at 16 weeks (mine was off the chart), at the 20 week scan his abdomen was large again so they sent me for the diabetes test (I don’t have any other risk factors, normal bmi, no history) that came back negative for diabetes so I think he’s just a chunk! 😂

MakeLemonade · 30/09/2018 15:56

I had this too and it’s not something they worry about at this stage - my midwife said it could just be that baby had taken a big gulp of amniotic fluid before the measurement was taken. They’ll do more involved measurements at 20 weeks and if it’s big then, they’ll look at it in more detail.

RedCorvette · 30/09/2018 16:13

I had similar on 16 week scan - tummy around 95/100 percentile.

Sonographer said measurements weren't accurate at that point, and not to worry about any of what was on the report - she thought baby looked fine.

When I went back at 20 weeks, and tummy had gone down to 75ish - which was in proportion with everything else.

IvanMashPotatoIvanDoTheTwist · 30/09/2018 16:21

This could be a print out from my scan at 32 weeks nearly 2 weeks ago. I had to go in for a GTT last week and will get the results this week. If I don't have gestational diabetes they don't do any other testing etc and just accept that baby will be big (1st baby was 8lb 7oz).
I had the scan to look at the placenta and hadn't had another since the routine 20 week scan. My midwife basically said that they can be inaccurate and actually unless it's a series of scans showing that the baby is big/getting bigger then a random figure isn't actually that useful and not to worry about it. If I do have GD I'll have to watch my diet more closely and monitor my blood sugars. I'm planning an elective c section this time (had an emergency last time) so size isn't really a concern xx

Firsttimetobe2019 · 03/10/2018 19:56

I have received a letter that books me in for a scan a day after I turn 20 weeks however, it is titled as a “Obstetric Foetal Anomaly Scan” so I assume it is to follow up on the stomach size?

OP posts:
TheSheepofWallSt · 03/10/2018 20:00

@Firsttime

No- the 20 week scan is the anomaly scan for everyone. There’s a common misapprehension that it’s the “gender scan”- it isn’t. It’s to check for anomalies in all babies. Don’t worry Smile

Emmafh3 · 03/10/2018 20:00

That's just what they call the 20 week scan?
That's what mine is called and my babe is measuring normal, and what it was called for my dd and she didn't measure off at that stage either

Firsttimetobe2019 · 03/10/2018 20:54

Oh I see, it was just they put the weeks in the title of previous scan so I assumed with the 20 they would do the same! Perfect thankyou
