Baby Clothes - what products are people using?

Hi,
Any experience from any new mums or anyone with recommendations would be really helpful.
First time mum here so not really a clue Hmm
The nursery furniture is going up this weekend, therefore I want to wash all the baby clothes/blankets ready to go away, what products have people been using to wash their stuff in?

Sorry if this is not the appropriate topic board, wasn't sure where else to log it, thank you xxxx

I'm in the same position as you i.e. not had my baby yet, but I heard Fairy non bio was a popular option and to ensure you consistently use the same products (assuming baby is not allergic) - currently me and my husband just buy washing powder etc that's on offer. My mum did say that my sister was allergic to Fairy non-bio but I think that's a case of all babies being different. I'd be interested to hear other's responses.

I use the Tesco baby detergent and softener

Bluebelltulip · 28/09/2018 14:28

I used the same as what we normally use, both me and my DH react to different ones so stuck with our common safe one. Persil non bio.

kenandbarbie · 28/09/2018 14:29

What I use for everyone else, in the wash with everyone's stuff. I think it's tesco washing blobs.

Fieau · 28/09/2018 14:31

We use persil non bio powder. I have really sensitive skin so use the same stuff for the baby as for me. He had really bad rashes the first few weeks and the health visitor said often babies react to fabric softener/conditioner so I stopped using that and the rash cleared up. It does make his clothes a bit harder, but definitely worth it. Just something to consider as I would have just kept trying different brands to get rid of the rash not realising I should only use detergent!

mumofmunchkin · 28/09/2018 14:35

90% of the time I use ecover for our stuff, because one of my kids comes out in eczema in response to anything else on his clothes. Before we had that issue though, I washed all household stuff (including baby stuff) in tesco non-bio.

I'm currently using fairy non-bio for the baby - however her dad has the constitution of an ox so hopefully she will follow him. I have an immune condition so I don't use fabric conditioner as it causes a contact dermatitis most of the time. There as some washing detergents can cause it some time.

One of the main things I found when I had a flare up was if you are using the drawer of the machine for powder/liquid, or live in a household where someone else does, is to ensure it is completely clean and no residue is left otherwise it gets in the rinse water.

happymummy12345 · 28/09/2018 15:00

I only used fairy non bio. Though I didn't bother washing stuff before using it.

welshweasel · 28/09/2018 15:02

Didn’t bother washing anything first. We use Aldi bio liquid for the whole family. Everything gets chucked in together at 30 degrees, never had an issue.

BlueBug45 · 28/09/2018 15:13

I forgot to say like welshweasel for baby I didn't wash anything that was new first. The reason not to is in case you have a larger baby then expected so need to exchange one of your sets of vests/baby gros/whatever for a large one.

welshweasel · 28/09/2018 15:36

Exactly!

Fieau · 28/09/2018 16:30

Sorry I completely disagree with the previous posters saying not to bother washing stuff first.... New clothes have chemicals/dye etc in that could irritate a babies skin.

If you're worried about sizes just wash a few of each size to have ready and wash the rest once baby is here and you know whether you need the smaller stuff.

SoyDora · 28/09/2018 17:03

Whatever non bio was on offer. I once used bio stuff and DD1 came out in a rash so haven’t done it since.

OutPinked · 28/09/2018 17:28

Had three DC and am pregnant with fourth. Never washed anything before using and thank fuck I didn’t with DC1 in particular, he was a shock ten pounder and didn’t fit in any of the newborn stuff at all!

Anyway I’ve always just used any non-bio. Provided it isn’t bio, it’s fine for baby skin.
