Nursery chair

I am due in October and we have nearly finished the nursery but we have yet to buy a chair for feeding.

I don't like the traditional BF chairs due to how they look. I would much prefer a normal arm chair but I'm struggling to find one which is upright enough.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Tia 😊

The Ro chair by Fritz Hansen

MonkeyToucher · 28/09/2018 11:52

Just an ordinary arm chair from John Lewis - they have loads of traditional style ones with straight backs and good height arm rests. Not the cheapest but will last forever and can be used elsewhere in the house when no longer needed for feeding etc

Stuckforthefourthtime · 28/09/2018 11:57

I've never bothered, just fed in bed or on the sofa - especially if you are planning to have the baby in your room at first. If you find positioning hard, the breastfeeding pillows are fab (and a lot cheaper and easier to deal with once you no longer need them!). Personally I'd wait and see if you really truly need one

Lots of people swear by the IKEA Poang but I hate the way they look.

I'm two babies in on an Ikea Strandmon wing chair with footstool and I think it's perfect - high-backed, the arms are the right height to support a baby and with the footstool you can be perfectly comfortable. I must have spent hundreds of hours feeding in mine.

surreygirl1987 · 28/09/2018 12:25

I'm going to get the Ikea poang- I like its bounciness!

Orangedaisy · 28/09/2018 12:33

Second the strandmon chair. Also on bf baby 2 and I have spent an absolute age on it. Also wide enough for me and both of mine to squash in and read stories so it has a nice long life ahead I think. Hate the poang as it’s got hard arms.

TruffleShuffles · 28/09/2018 13:18

I’ve also got the ikea poang, haven’t used it yet though as baby is still a few weeks off. They do a good range of frame and cushion colour options and I also purchased the matching footstool.

Celebelly · 28/09/2018 13:31

We've just got a Poang rocking chair. It's super comfy

cookiesaurus · 28/09/2018 14:21

Thanks all for the reply - I have got a BF pillow which came in my Chico next to me crib pack so will try that when the baby comes along.

I'd like to have a chair in the nursery to soften the furniture up a bit. The Strandnom is more along the look I was after than the Poang so will have a proper look when I finish work!

The Ro chair is too expensive really. We've got some JL armchairs in our front room (I think they're called claverdon or something like that but they don't fit the decor of the nursery and I would like a fabric chair ideally). I'll have another look in JL at the weekend - I just found that some of their chairs on display just weren't comfortable BUT I'm not sure if that is due to being pregnant!!

Thanks :)

I was the same as you. Wanted a nursery chair but not a traditional one as with the footstool, they’re far to big aswell no found this from Aldi and am totally in love with it. It’s gorgeous quality and such a fab price.
Come with 2 sets of legs which are easy to change so it goes from a rocker into a normal chair. Love the fact that we can use it as a normal modern armchair once we don’t need it in baby’s room anymore.
The colour is a very pale grey, more like the picture with the pillow and teddy.

Oh and the price is £149.99. Not sure what your budget is x

mumofmunchkin · 28/09/2018 14:37

I used the IKEA poang for years, love it, and it's cheap!

SophieStripe · 28/09/2018 17:56

@magicalcreatures have u actually bought the aldi chair? I am SO tempted as I love it but just wondering on quality... I also like the look of this one from wayfair www.wayfair.co.uk/furniture/pdp/lily-manor-pesmes-armchair-lakm1605.html?piid=20590312

OrdinaryGirl · 28/09/2018 18:41

Oh the Ikea Strandmon is divinely comfty. 😍 We call it the Story Chair. Have spent the life of my twins kicking myself for not getting a nice chair with DS1.

MagicalCreatures · 28/09/2018 19:31

@SophieStripe yes it’s in the (unfinished) nursery just waiting to be enjoyed. It is stunning. Even better quality then I expected (and I’m fussy)
In the picture where the chair is on rockers, the fabric looks darker and not as nice so I was sceptical about ordering it when I saw that, but when I and it’s much more like the other picture with the pillow and teddy on. It’s beautiful and very comfy. The seat is very wide and long so I don’t feel like I even need a footrest.

MrsDrambuie · 28/09/2018 19:32

Next - Sherlock armchair. Comes in tons of different colours. £450 though so depends on your budget. We know we will have it for years and years, specifically picked a colour that will go well in other rooms in the house when no longer needed in the nursery.

overagain · 28/09/2018 19:46

IKEA stocksund. They are wider than a standard armchair and so comfy. Now we have it in DSs room and he's 3 and he and I snuggle on it to read his bed time story. Going to get a second for DD.

Thistledew · 28/09/2018 19:49

Have a look on eBay or in antique shops for an antique nursing chair. They are amazingly comfortable to feed in compared to a normal chair as the short legs give you a good flat lap and the arm rests are just the right height. You could consider getting one reupholstered in a fabric of your choice to match your nursery.

AvoidingDM · 28/09/2018 19:59

Another vote for poang & footstool.
Love it, its not too costly and its great for bedtime stories too.

cookiesaurus · 29/09/2018 07:07

I have a next home store nearby so will go and try the Sherlock out. It looks nice with the range of fabric!

I'm going to buy something I can try first as sometimes I think they look great but they aren't always that comfy!

There's some great ideas on here!

Note - there are 3 sizes of Sherlock chair - a bit like Goldilocks Smile We found one that was too big, one that was too small, and the middle one was just right! Arriving tomorrow Smile

sohypnotic · 29/09/2018 08:11

I too like ikea strandmon chairs, we have one downstairs, however they are quite large if nursery is small.

We got a cheap chair from the range in the end which is perfectly comfy. I also find having a footstool is a must for balance!

Whatever you get, don't splash out - it will only get covered in breastmilk/formula and vomit!

cookiesaurus · 12/10/2018 09:00

I've ordered the Sherlock chair from Next - we went and tried it out and it was really comfortable and as it is available in so many different fabrics it fits with the decor too!

There's a bit of a wait for the footstool but I can't wait for it to arrive now! Thanks for all the advice!
