Midwife and antinatal clinic - what's the difference?

Hi all,

My GP has referred me to the antinatal clinic as wel s the midwife. I'm only 4+2 so I have a few weeks to wait yet.

My question is, what's the difference? He said he's referring me to the AN clinic because of my complex medical history (which is extremely complex!). For starters I have severe Graves disease (overactive thyroid which is currently controlled and stable on meds).

Any advice would be much appreciated :) Thank you!

Antenatal clinic could be for a consultant appointment, as I imagine you'll be consultant led through this pregnancy

Pregnancy can mess up thyroid function even in people who don’t have thyroid issues normally. They will probably increase monitoring your thyroid. If there are any other implications, the consultant will be able to explain them to you.

Likely to be for consultant/specialist led treatment.

For me, I’m diabetic so it’s a multidisciplinary clinic fortnightly where I will typically see a diabetes consultant and an obstetrician who specialises in diabetes. Regular scans too. The frequency and people you see will differ depending on the condition/s you’re being seen for though.

What medication are you on for the Graves disease? Some are contraindicated during pregnancy.
