Currently 36 weeks pregnant and I didn't get the downs blood test at my 12 week scan, starting to worry a little bit. But I was wondering if they can tell from your ultrasound and not just a blood test ?
This is second pregnancy and I was low risk for my first

I'm sorry but you are 36 weeks. If the sonographer had any concerns regarding your scan, they would have raised them at the time.

I understand it's a worry, but a scan alone won't answer your question, if it did all the other tests would be obselete.

Raise it with your midwife next appointment.

It's not for Mumsnetters to diagnose according to your scan picture

SoyDora · 27/09/2018 08:36

No you can’t diagnose from the 12 week scan picture, otherwise the NHS wouldn’t bother with the screening.

beccii161016 · 27/09/2018 10:15

No they can't tell from your scan alone that's why they do the blood test. I'm pretty sure there's not anything you can do now, just wait until baby is born.

ladycarlotta · 27/09/2018 10:33

Do you mean you didn't get the blood test results back, or that you didn't have bloods taken in the first place? The latter would really surprise me. As for the former, it took about 5 weeks for me to receive the results of my 12-week screening via post, and only then because I chased it up with my midwife. They are pretty slow to get back to you if the results are normal, so usually no news is good news, but chase it if you're worried.

The only thing I can suggest is if you have the nuchal fold measurement in your notes, you can look up whether it's within the normal range. But tbh since none of us are experts, doing your own research of this nature could cause more worry than it solves.

mumofmunchkin · 27/09/2018 10:37

ladycarlotta I assume that she refused the testing at the 12 week scan.

No one can diagnose from a scan, and certainly not from a scan picture. You only have a few weeks to go, try to put this out of your mind and focus on your baby. If your sonographer had seen any soft markers for downs they would have highlighted this at your 20 week scan, so the odds are that your baby is totally fine.

albert92 · 27/09/2018 10:56

Yeah I choice not to have the blood test as on the day I felt quite unwell ! I know the blood test is the best way to find out but apparently there a lot of things that flag up from your scans that can Indicate Downs I don't know why I'm worrying so much I'm convinced somethings wrong I really wish I had the blood test :(

Only a trained sonographer can identify those things though albert92, and only during the scan when they can move around and get the best angle - no one can identify any markers from a profile scan picture.

If they didn't highlight any markers during your scan, then they didn't see any.

Foodylicious · 27/09/2018 12:33

Can you stretch to pay for a private scan?
Have a look around online at what places are available near you. Quite a difference in price between places.

Not that I think you should have, or need a scan, but if it will reassure you, it may be more than worth it.

Flowers, anxiety is awful at times. Once something gets stuck in your head it's hard to shift

Uk NHS. I got all the tests aged 22 as offered by doctor with first pregnancy.
No risks healthy child.
Friend had blood tests & was very high risk. she & family worried & stressed all the way through pregnancy & it was not enjoyable experience for them at all.
Baby born perfectly healthy.
So when I was pregnant 2nd time around I had none of the genetic blood tests & enjoyed my pregnancy. Baby was here to stay regardless of any issues. We would deal with whatever arrived.
Again perfectly healthy.
Why

weepat · 27/09/2018 12:43

Sorry posted too soon.

Why worry. baby will be here soon enough so hopefully all will be well .
Enjoy the time you have before birth.

If you had a normal 20 week anomaly scan then it’s unlikely that another scan now would pick up anything. However scans cannot pick up all cases of Down’s.

You could look at Harmony testing for peace of mind but it seems a bit of a waste of money at this stage.

What is your risk based on your age? If it’s low and your anomaly scan was normal then I would think it very unlikely that your baby has Down’s.

albert92 · 27/09/2018 13:00

@Darkstar4855 I'm 22 so I'm guessing I would normally be low risk but I've read stories of people at age 19-20 and there results coming back as high risk but obviously if I was a high rick I wouldn't of done anything anyway I just think it's good to prepare yourself.

Even if you took those who came back as high risk though, very few of those babies will actually turn out to have Down’s. 1/150 is considered “high risk” but that still means 149/150 of those babies will not have Down’s. So please try not to worry and enjoy what’s left of your pregnancy.
