Is it possible to retract GD diagnosis?

Hello ladies,
Was any of you diagnosed with GD with diet controll afterwards and maybe later on they retracted the diagnosis ?
Or now that they put the massive bright sticker of "GD diagnosis" on the front of my notes, i have to do whatever they say?

I would love to give birth in barnet birth center but i am not allowed with that stupid diagnosis (all my readings are below 6, no matter what i eat).
Anyone managed to get rid of their diagnosis???

Ask to redo the GTT.

You can't get it retracted. You seem like you have it well under control so it wouldn't hurt to have the discussion with your consultant about your wishes for the birth suite. Remember that your baby will need extra monitoring after birth so that may not be possible in a birth suite.

Do your notes state the results of your GTT?

I would talk to the hospital about your concerns.

adviceonthepox · 27/09/2018 15:59

Are you having readings under 5?
Have you ever had a reading over 7?
It would be very unusual to have a misdiagnosis if you did the gtt correctly.
The hospital should be doing a hba1c blood test this gives your average reading over the last 3 months. If that is well within normal range then I would say you need to ask the consultant to explain where the GD diagnosis has come from and why can't you just continue as normal.
They know from the hba1c test if your sugars are good or not this should have been done once diagnosed and repeated after 6 weeks.
The risks to baby are a big concern with diabetes especially if baby is big.

Thanks for all your responses Smile
My baby boy is meassuring fine (spot on they say). My GTT was 9.0 after 2 hours.
Since u started meassuring at home 1 week ago, i did not go over 6. Only once a 7.2 Wink well, after some naughty dessert.
I was hoping that maybe someone had gone through this and managed to proof them wrong.
I will fight for the birth centre as i think its best for baby & myself when i feel relaxed.
Hopefully they allow me to repeat the GTT Smile

@jasmin93 the thing is anyone whose body is producing insulin and whose body is using it correctly will not have a reading any higher than 7 ever. Regardless of how much sugar or carbohydrate they eat.
Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes where the pancreas produces insulin but your body does not use it to regulate glucose in your blood.
As you have only been testing for a week I would expect them to tell you to continue testing and will take blood to check your levels at your next appointment. It's not just the highs that are an issue it's the lows as well. If you having readings below 5 that could indicate that insulin isn't being produced properly.
It's early days in your diagnosis, how many weeks pregnant are you? If your below 30 weeks you will monitored regularly and scanned often. I don't want to scare you but it's important you understand why they want you in the hospital.
When you have Diabetes high sugar can cause the placenta to fail. Most trusts offer induction at 38 weeks because of this. Induction does have to be in hospital for monitoring and the risk of intervention.

I had GD twice my first gtt readings were 6.1 fasting 9.1 2 hours later. I was diet controlled until 34 weeks when I had to start metformin as I was having high readings. My daughter was induced @ 38 weeks and 4 days. She was 9lb 11ozs. I had a scan 2 days before who gave an estimated weight of 7lb. As I delivered the placenta it fell apart. I count my blessings she was ok. She ended up in scbu as her blood sugars were really low and my breast milk wasn't bringing them back up. She couldn't keep down enough milk for her size, after 24 hours she was fine and maintained her sugar levels.
My second time with GD I was prepared so had been eating a low carb diet and I got to 32 weeks before being diagnosed. (Gtt at 16,22,28 then 32 weeks)
my reading on GTT was 5.9 fasting which is considered high it should be 5 and 7.9 after. I managed to stay diet controlled until 36 weeks then again I was given metformin as my readings were creeping up again. This time I was induced at 38 weeks exactly and she was born 8lb 7ozs. No problem with my placenta this time but again her sugar level was so low I had to formula feed her to get them up.
I've been lucky the GD has gone both times after birth but I have now developed type 2 diabetes 3 years later.
Where you give birth is in no way as important as the safety of you and your child.
I was grateful for the help and support I received and accepted my fate! No water birth for me.

dontticklethetoad · 27/09/2018 22:49

I have had GD three times (bmi 26, so just out of the 'healthy' range, so guess I was just unlucky).
For all three pregnancies, as the pregnancy progressed, my control worsened, no matter how careful I was weighing out carbs etc. So ended up on insulin in the end each time.
So you may find that it is out of your hands.

jasmin93 · 27/09/2018 23:53

@adviceonthepox, thank you for sharing your experience. So glad to hear both of your children are healthy. So sad to hear that you developed diabetes afterwards....
This is truly eye opening. I never thought about it this way.
Im sure they have their reasons. I am 35 weeks pregnant & near the end.
I keep my levels low by cutting out most desserts/chocolates. Next week i will see the obstetric team & midwife to go through my readings.
I really appreciate your response. It makes me think differently now. I should focus on my boys health and safety before my comfort. Flowers xx

My GTT showed GD but ongoing monitoring displayed no problem at all, even if I wasn't that careful with diet. After a while they stopped bothering to check and it was never mentioned again. I assumed they'd decided it was some kind of anomaly. No problems with the baby or the placenta, measurements fine all the way through.

jasmin93 · 28/09/2018 10:00

@sharplily did they put the GD sticker in your maternity notes? Where did you give birth if i may ask? In a birth centre or consultant led unit?
Thanks

This was in France so my notes and the whole system were completely different to what you have in the UK. I don't believe they ever actually retracted the diagnosis but they definitely ignored it in the end. This time around I'm in Spain, due for my GTT within the next month and am interested to see what's going to happen.

jasmin93 · 28/09/2018 12:53

@sharplily, they all seam to handle it differently. I hope everything goes well for you again - this time in spain Smile.
I take it how it comes now. I am sure the professionals know better than me and will do their best for our little one.
Xx
