Hi,

When does the above stop please ?😩 I'm 9 weeks preg and for the past few weeks I've started to gip a lot whilst brushing my teeth but this last week it has got a lot worse and around 30 seconds after I've finished I'm sick even with nothing in my body first thing on a morning. Does this ever stop or will I have this all the way through pregnancy? Also does anyone kno why this happens x

I'm 18+1 and still a retching sicky mess. Grim but I'm just brushing later In The day

Week 32! I used mouth wash regularly and my dentist increased my visits to every three months. I was vomiting many times a day and was admitted to hospital for drips so it wasn’t just being unable to brush. Luckily I didn’t really want to eat much either! I found non mint toothpaste was a bit better (children’s orange flavour for example).

emwithme · 26/09/2018 20:12

The sickness itself passed in week 13.

I'm now 30+3 and still retch every time I clean my teeth. I am very aware that I'm only doing a half-added job of it at the moment, as long as every tooth is brushed once on each side, that has to do. I'll see the hygienist once The Parasite is here

AutumnGlitterBall · 26/09/2018 20:13

I couldn’t stick the taste of the mint or the toothbrush either. Used to just do it as soon as I got up to get the first morning puke out of the way. I was sick daily until about six months. Kept using mouthwash but still ended up needing two fillings post-birth 😩

newcupcake · 26/09/2018 20:14

Sorry to say I struggled to clean my teeth throughout all my pregnancies even when the sickness abated

WakeUpSlow · 26/09/2018 20:15

For my last pregnancy and this time I've used strawberry flavour baby toothpaste to brush my teeth. And had to drink lemonade straight after.

eurochick · 26/09/2018 20:17

It was throughout for me too. I'd start retching as I moved the toothbrush towards my mouth. I could usually manage the front few teeth. I got a deep clean at the dentist post pregnancy.

MCC85 · 26/09/2018 20:18

All the way through and occasionally afterwards 🤢

donniemurdo · 26/09/2018 20:26

Throughout for me and I still gag every time I brush my teeth and am occasionally sick now - my youngest is 5.5 years old! Confused I didn't have this problem before I was pregnant Sad

Roxetta · 26/09/2018 20:28

Donniemurdo exact same for me. Youngest is 2.5 and I still gag! Don't think I'll ever get past it!

Seeline · 26/09/2018 20:30

My youngest is 14 and I still get it. Never before I was pg!

OnMyWhistle · 26/09/2018 20:45

No advice but I used to cry because my toothpaste tasted of perfume when I was pregnant! You have my sympathies!

jjjjohn · 26/09/2018 21:52

Oh god!!! Thought it was nearly over 😩 guess I have a long way to go lol

I used to have gross thoughts when brushing my teeth that made me retch and I realised it was stress-related. I worked on distracting myself while brushing and that worked so it stopped around 20 weeks. Incidentally, my partner has always suffered from gagging while brushing his teeth. Revelation last week when he bought some herbal toothpaste from Aesop. Not cheap (£11 per tube) but worth every penny since he can now brush and won’t lose his great teeth!!

Likewise and my youngest is 10 now!

catinboots9 · 27/09/2018 05:12

Hiya. Sorry to add this, but I started gagging on my toothbrush when I was pregnant with DC1 and it still happens most days if I'm not very gentle around my back teeth. DC1 is 19 and just gone to uni.

Havetothink · 27/09/2018 10:36

My dentist told me to just brush without toothpaste if necessary as I was avoiding the back teeth to keep from gagging.

Brakebackcyclebot · 27/09/2018 10:37

sorry to say this, but I started this in pregnancy, and it still happens. Not every day, but maybe 3-4 times a week, cleaning my teeth makes me gag.

My youngest child is 12. Shock

catinboots9 · 27/09/2018 21:50

What is this phenomenon? I thought it was just me! Yeah, yeah I'm fully aware of the stretch marks/bigger boobs/weird hair hormone-related baby stuff. But my gag reflex ??? Just why?

OpenThatTrapDoor · 28/09/2018 08:19

Still happening here at 20 weeks too. General nausea has been ongoing throughout, although just been given some medication for the nausea so will see if that makes any difference.

myotherbagisgucci · 28/09/2018 08:24

I'm 16 weeks and still get this. I haven't had any morning sickness or nausea, I just retch or throw up every time the toothbrush touches my teeth! 🤮

TryingToStayRational · 28/09/2018 11:36

I struggled with this too. I felt sick pretty much constantly til 12 weeks and brushing my teeth was yuk. I felt progressively better from around 12 weeks, and by 16 weeks was much better, although I’d say I’m still more prone to gagging than I was before pregnancy. I brushed with just water first, then put toothpaste on and tried coat my teeth as much as possible with that. But if I felt really bad then just water. I have a mint and menthol allergy so use berry flavour toothpaste anyway, but if you think the paste itself might be an issue maybe try switching? My dentist advises me to aim for 1300ppm fluoride as a minimum, and many childrens (rather than baby) toothpastes do have this amount. I’m using Sainsbury’s kids fruity berry at the moment, for example.

Hope you feel better soon. I found 9-10 weeks a really crap time as it just felt never-ending and exhausting, and I was terrified I would feel like that for another 30 weeks. I know some people do, and I have so much sympathy for anyone who has to endure that, I really do. But it is much more common to feel better in the second trimester, so hopefully that will be the case for you too.

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 28/09/2018 13:10

I have always gagged a little when brushing teeth but it has gotten so much worse since getting pregnant. I'm didn't suffer with morning sickness, more all day queasiness, but the gagging ALWAYS sent me over the edge and caused me to vomit.

My little tip, and this hasn't been completely foolproof although I'd say its reduced the gagging 80% is to hold the thumb of your other hand in its palm whilst brushing (so right thumb in right palm if brushing with left hand) it is totally an "in your mind" thing but I swear it works most of the time! if i feel like I'm going to gag I just hold a little tighter for a few seconds to distract myself.

Autumn28 · 28/09/2018 19:22

I really struggled to start with. I found brushing me teeth just once a day was the only thing I could do. It started to get better around 4 months but then my gums started to bleed a lot. I’m due in 2 weeks and now I can brush my teeth twice a day without gagging and only a little amount of bleeding.

CobaltRose96 · 28/09/2018 19:25

I'm 17 weeks and although the nausea has mostly gone, I still gag when brushing my teeth!
