Hi, had call from midwife a little while ago to say I have got gestational diabetes following the results of my GTT test. Got to go hospital Friday morning so they can talk me through it. But is anyone else in the same boat and can tell me what to expect. What can I and can’t I eat now? Any meal suggestions? I am 26 weeks pregnant, I have had no symptoms and no history in family, first baby so it’s a bit of a shock to have it, feel really upset right now.

I got diagnosed about a month ago. It’s not too bad really. I’ve been able to control it fine with diet and exercise so I haven’t had to go on medication. The finger pricks are grand once you get used to them.

Don’t worry too much about your diet until Friday. Just cut back on Carbs and cut out sugar.

I found the food pairing advice on www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk to be very helpful.

I was really upset for a week or two but it really hasn’t been that bad. Look after yourself and don’t feel guilty. It’s not your fault. It’s just how your body has reacted.

I had it in my last pregnancy. Tbh I found that food really had no bearing on what my blood sugar was and it only spiked when I was stressed. Apparently this is rare but not unheard of. Try not to worry and read all the scare stories. Also means you'll get growth scans so more sneaky little look ins at baby which is a plus.
