Maternity coat - worth it?

Hi, I’m due end of Jan and debating whether to buy a maternity coat.... none of my old coats fit anymore as they were all quite a fitted style.

Is it worth buying a maternity coat or should I just get a normal one in a big size?

I would get a maternity coat. And probably go one size up than you usually are.
I am due in a couple of weeks and held off buying one, but had to get one a few weeks ago when it turned cold.
I got a maternity and baby wearing one, so it has an extra panel that is zipped in so it can go round you and baby when baby is in a carrier on your front.

My first was a January baby and my second is due November, I didn't bother either time, just wore my coat undone with a big scarf to keep my tummy warm! It probably depends how cold it will be where you live though, I'm on the south coast so winter isn't too harsh here.

I'll be getting one. I'm looking at one of the waterproof ones with the zip in panel, and I might also get a smarter one but I'm not sure yet.

The way I see it, I won't wear a coat in a bigger size after having the baby either, so I'd rather have something that makes me feel fabulous when I'm heavily pregnant and feel like a beached whale :)

I was due January this year and bought a maternity coat this time last year. I was walking 3 miles a day to take ds1 to playgroup when I started mat leave last December right up until I had Ds2 so needed a coat that would fasten over bump. Their not hugely expensive and I think it's worth it especially if we may have a bad winter.

Thanks everyone, any retailers you've seen with particularly nice ones?

I just got the maternity parka from Asda- it was only £30 and withstood the test of a North West Scotland winter! I wasn’t expecting it to be as warm or waterproof as it was! It also came with the extra zip in panel, but I’m able to wear it without with DS in the sling and it fastens over him. It’s been one of my best purchases.

Angelmiracle · 26/09/2018 09:06

H&M have some nice coats online. Asda have some cheaper standard coats.

SoyDora · 26/09/2018 09:12

I’m due at the end of December and will get a maternity coat. I can’t be bothered with faffing around with ‘workarounds’! My first was a November baby and I used the coat afterwards to zip over the baby in the sling so it lasted me a while.

le42 · 26/09/2018 09:15

Perfect, thanks ladies, I'll try Asda! If it withstood North West Scotland, London will be a breeze!!! :)

I've never needed one but have found Asda maternity wear really well priced & good quality, they had some nice ones on there when I was looking yesterday (I just searched coats). As pp have said if you plan to carry at all it'll come in useful then too.

I'm not due until April but I can hardly zip up my fitted winter coat so I think I'm going to need one - my problem is that I'm tall and have to buy coats from tall ranges, and NOWHERE seems to sell tall maternity coats! Apparently you can be tall or pregnant but not both!

I didn't bother and had my DS in February - just wore my existing coat with a big scarf and had an old massive anorak of my dads when it chucked it down. It was a little bit miserable and actually I do wish I'd bought one now because I've discovered on selling off my maternity wear on eBay that people pay a heck of a lot for second hand maternity clothes so I wouldn't have really lost anything and would have been more comfy!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 26/09/2018 09:34

@TillyTheTiger I feel your pain. You can't be short and pregnant either IME

anniehm · 26/09/2018 10:13

Buy a bigger size from charity shop and look for a loose fitting style - you can donate it back afterwards

Omgoap · 26/09/2018 10:28

Just buy one, maternity stuff has a great resell value - or buy second hand if one takes your fancy on eBay

le42 · 26/09/2018 10:38

Cool thank you everyone, I'll just buy one. I've bought other maternity clothes as it makes me depressed to live in leggings everyday! :) Plus I LOVE maternity dungarees!

There is a brand that does a maternity insert that zips in, that way you have a coat you can wear after pregnancy too. Can’t remember the brand, might have been Zara

Foodylicious · 26/09/2018 10:54

TillyTheTiger have you looked at longer coats?

I imagine if you have quite long arms then this might not work, but this longer length coat at Jojo is goegeous

I didn’t buy a maternity coat. It seemed a lot of money for something I’d only wear for 10-12 weeks. I just wore my normal coat with a big scarf, and towards the end I borrowed my Dad’s coat!

Curlypop · 26/09/2018 10:58

I'm due January too. Just nipped into H&M and got a £75 maternity coat for £30 in the sale. It's a size too big but my word it's cozy! Will be handy on the school run. It's not online so check in store!

Rarfy · 26/09/2018 11:00

Asda hve them for about £30. Dorothy perkins is worth a look too bit pricier but often have discounts. Theres asos as well.

Also due end of january and wasnt going to bother until last wkend when it was flipping freezing.
