What age clothes do you buy up to?

I'm expecting my first baby soon. I'm trying to get organised and have bought lots of newborn & 0-3 months.

Should I start buying 3-6 & older too or do mums usually wait until baby is here?

I’d wait until the baby is here tbh as you don’t know what the weather will be like when they’re in the size, if you do see a baby grow that you love they’re always practical and adorable in the first year imo!

Beebeebeek · 24/09/2018 21:01

I do love babygrows! His wardrobe will consist 99% of those :)

I would definitely not buy 3-6m now - you will be amazed by the amount of gifts you get. Generally way too much 0-3, so I took back anything that was surplus or I didn’t like - you can usually get an exchange without the receipt - and the resulting gift vouchers clothed DD til she was about 18 months!!

Babyboymama · 25/09/2018 03:21

I’m 37 weeks and have some clothes in 9-12 months!! Seems crazy but when people buy clothes as gifts they tend to get you bigger sizes as they assume you’ll have loads of newborn and 0-3. I also ended up buying a few bits for baby in 6-9 and 9-12 months in the sale because things were so cheap as it was the end of summer sale so I just bought for how old baby will be next summer 😊

BertieBotts · 25/09/2018 04:19

Definitely not older than 3-6 unless complete basics you could use in any season. But also don't go too mad in sizes smaller than 0-3 as they don't always stay in them very long.

BertieBotts · 25/09/2018 04:21

The problem with buying ahead is that babies can be up to about two sizes ahead or behind those age categories so you really have no idea of the correct season.

BlueBug45 · 25/09/2018 07:12

I have clothes up to 6 months. I personally have not brought any outfits for my baby or the 3-6 month baby gros, vests, snow suits etc. The ones I have are gifts or borrowed. For the gifts I have gift receipts but to be honest the items aren't very season specific unlike the borrowed items e.g. snow suits. Also be aware that different shops sizes aren't the same even though they have the same weight on them so for example newborn items in Primark and Next are smaller than newborn items at Boots.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/09/2018 07:17

The odd bit that I liked of 3-6. A bit of 0-3. A fair bit of newborn. Mainly 'tiny baby' up to 5lb/6lb stuff (all of mine have been small). As long as you've got stuff for the first few days you don't really need a lot else as you'll be given a lot as presents & anything desperately needed can be ordered for next day or if you want a trip out can be picked up in the shops.

usernotfound0000 · 25/09/2018 08:05

I'd wait. I didn't with DD and bought ahead but she didn't grow at the rate I expected her to so stuff I bought for summer didn't fit until Autumn so was all pretty much useless, there's no way of knowing until they arrive. I also bought lots of dresses for DD and soon realised how impractical these were until she was comfortably walking, so again, these mostly went unused.

vinegarqueen · 25/09/2018 08:35

I would buy a few bits up to 3-6 (babygros and trousers with feet rule) and then reassess after the influx of gifts. That said, I bought some lovely romper suits on sale in 18-24 when DS was 2 months old and they were a great buy. I loved the style and had a hunch I wouldn't see them again, which was true.

Katinkak8 · 25/09/2018 08:40

I would agree with all of the PP who say to wait. The seasons might not be right/sizing comes up differently and you might decide that you dislike certain items of clothes. I got bought loads of beautiful dresses for my DD but when she was crawling they were a real pain. She kept crawling on them and tripping herself up! Grin

jusdepamplemousse · 25/09/2018 08:40

Vests and babygros - knock yourself out - probably not too much newborn though as they grow out of it very quickly. Weather dependent clothes - just wait. DS 4 mths currently wearing 6-9 or 9-12 mth stuff. DD would still fit her 0-3 mth stuff at 4 mths. You can’t predict how big and long they grow at what speed!

CaptainCorrigan · 25/09/2018 08:43

I would buy as you go. We had a lot of each size, but my baby skipped from 25th to 75th centile so never fitted all the 3-6 months we had! Hes 5 months and fills 6-9 now going into 9-12! Also a lot of the stuff we had wasn't weather appropriate so he's never worn it.

ChangerChangerson · 25/09/2018 08:45

I have a 6 month old, before he was born the biggest thing we had was 3-6 months and were babygrows someone kindly bought us. From my own experience, I would avoid day-wear clothing much older than this as you'll need to take into account seasons. My baby is very skinny but long, however, I have a friend whose baby has an almost identical birthday to mine and he is shorter and chubbier, the sizes they're both wearing differ considerably. It's much easier to buy at the time you need something so you know you're getting the right size for whatever time of year you need it.

KNain · 25/09/2018 09:37

Against the grain but I bought a year's worth of clothes for both my DS's. it meant I could buy everything in the sales (e.g. I have just bought all next year's summer clothes in the sales that are on at the moment).

It means I've spent probably 1/2 of what I would have done if I'd bought at full price. And then I've supplemented it with bits if needed (e.g. DS1 has short skinny legs so tends to need skinny trousers/jeans in the size down - but he grows into the big ones eventually and trousers are pretty much always needed, regardless of season)

Yes just be aware of gifts though - we got tons of 3-6month and 6-9 months.

CheeseOnToast123 · 25/09/2018 09:44

I bought up to 1 year with each of mine but can see why people don’t, unless it’s shorts or winter jackets though most clothes can be worn all seasons. Up until they’re around 6yo I tend to have a stash of clothes ready in the next size up that I buy in sales.

happymummy12345 · 25/09/2018 10:25

I didn't want to know the sex and I'm superstitious so didn't want much until the baby was born. I got the bare minimum to take to hospital in size newborn. When the baby was born it turned out we needed size tiny baby, so we got them instead.
I'd never buy more than one size at a time. I don't see the need, plus it's storing it all.

EssentialHummus · 25/09/2018 13:03

I bought some way in advance - DD is 12 months and we're only just using some of it. Fine for all-season basics (bodysuits, basic trousers, even some jackets) but beyond this we've had a few we could've done without. But then I bought things that were very marked down, so not too much of a loss there.

londonliv · 25/09/2018 14:58

Haven't really bought any but today & saw some really cute things in the Boden sale which I bought in 6-12 month size. The rest of her clothes will be her big brothers so I figured I'd splash out on a couple of girly things Grin
