Baby coat

Baby due in November. Am looking for a coat for her, something padded and cosy with inbuilt hands and feet. Don't want to spend too much. Any suggestions and also what size is a good idea? My bump is measuring about right so presume average sized baby?

I would perhaps look at tupence and crumble star wraps.

What you are describing is a snow suit and they can’t be worn in car seats.

SophieStripe · 22/09/2018 18:13

I'm looking for something similar. We go for lots of walks so this would be for the pram and not the car seat

BikeRunSki · 22/09/2018 18:21

As a PP said, avoid anything thick and quilted if you are planning to use it in a car seat (in a crash the fabric compresses too much for the straps to work to work properly). I really liked the Bush Baby Hot Tot, the smaller sizes have built in feet, and you can buy seperate mitts to clip on. They do come up quite big though!!

Wolfiefan · 22/09/2018 18:24

Bump measuring right means very little! Mine did and DS didn’t fit newborn stuff. DD was a winter baby and she had mainly cardys and blankets.

DryHeave · 22/09/2018 18:27

My baby was born in November and we did lots of walking in the pram. You can get an all in one padded or fleecy snowsuit for not very much money in any supermarket or High Street shop. I got mine from a charity shop I think or perhaps eBay. Baby was a big boy and still fitted into the up to 1 month size for a few weeks.

grouchymamabear · 22/09/2018 18:29

You can get some really nice ones from Asda, M&S, Next, H&M, etc. Our LO was born last December and we got him a up to 1 month one from Tesco and a 0-3 month one from Asda but still needed to get a larger one before the end of the winter and he's only on the 9th percentile for length. Really hard to know what's what with baby sizes!

Bananacentral · 22/09/2018 18:30

Get a padded snowsuit. We loved M&S ones last year when our LO was a newborn. Don’t buy too small. It’s always better they’re a little big with some growing room! They look huge when you see them but the inside is actually so small with the padding that we ended up having to size up pretty quickly!!

As others have said, you can't use it in a carseats BUt you can use a morrck blanket so if you want something for in the carseat consider that.

DryHeave · 22/09/2018 18:33

To add: baby generally had vest/baby grow/sometimes cardigan & hat on (because the hood was always gappy) under snow suit. Snug as a bug!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 22/09/2018 18:34

Please remember any padded coat or all in one suit must be taken off when the child is in the car seat.

coffeekittens · 22/09/2018 18:35

I’ve got a lovely one from Primark, it’s unisex, soft and cosy, zips up and has inbuilt feet and mittens, I think it was £8. My baby is due in February so I’ve bought it in upto 1 month and 0-3. I remember with DD(5) Tk Maxx and next being good for snowsuits.

overagain · 22/09/2018 18:39

I also preferred blankets for in the pram unless I was specifically going for a long walk. If I was walking to the shops or for a coffee id just use blankets, or you could guarantee baby would fall asleep in the snow suit and I'd risk him overheating or having to wake him to get him out if it (he was a bad sleeper.

WooYa · 22/09/2018 18:41

I bought a lovely star one and a Winnie the Pooh one from Asda today 😍

magpie24 · 22/09/2018 19:46

Thank you everyone and also for the tips about car seats, as I wasn't aware of that. We live in London so won't be using the car much, planning on getting around by foot as much as possible.

I’ve got a really cheap one from Primark in up to 1 month as I don’t expect it to be worn much at all but I wanted something that would fit straight away. I’ve also got one from H&M in 1-3, they are both a fleecy style rather than the really thick padded ones. They also both have the inbuilt feet and mittens with a hood.

NanooCov · 22/09/2018 22:56

I have a December baby and a November baby. I didn't actually use a snow suit for either one. I don't drive so walk everywhere or take public transport. I found the big padded suits a nuisance as if you went in anywhere with them they'd overheat in it unless you took it off which wasn't possible without waking them. I layered them up instead so I could easily peel off layers of blankets if necessary.

hammeringinmyhead · 23/09/2018 09:00

We have a snowsuit from TKMaxx. It's branded Lily and Jack. Think it was £14?

We bought a bit bigger than first size because Nov and Dec can be quite mild. If it snows and goes below freezing it's usually Jan-March.

Momma22 · 23/09/2018 13:35

My DD was born in November. We had a beautiful white snowsuit from mamas and papas, which she wore once! Even in November we found she was absolutely roasting when we got her out of it, and I was worried about her overheating. We found a nice fleecy or velour babygrow with an ordinary padded coat on top, wool hat, mitts and a blanket over her legs was good enough, as she already had the top of the pram carrycot over her aswell. When there was a cold wind we put the rain cover on the pram too, whether it was raining or not, just to stop the cold air blowing onto her. I also found the snow suit a total nightmare to get on and off, as other posters have said you're better off just layering up the blankets, because say it's freezing when you first leave the house then warms up later, you can just remove a layer and vice versa.

dreamyflower · 23/09/2018 17:28

Snowsuit! M&S always do loads. Not too pricey..I would get 0-3 months. Our DS was in newborn for a week!
