Hi
I am just wondering when most people started getting clothes for newborn? I am 29 weeks and would like to get some bits but am unsure in size and it looks like there are a couple of options for new borns depending on birth size which is hard to know. What are people's top recommendations to start with getting/most essential.
Thank you

I got up to 10lb babygros for DS. It was fairly obvious by my bump that I was having a big baby. He was 9lb9 and this fitted great for about 4 weeks. Next are usually smaller fit I got up to 14lb in their gros they were great. 0-3 month's will drown most newborns initially but doesnt take them long fitting into them. If you feel your baby is average size probably up to 8lbs would be ok at first.

Up to 1 month for ds, he didn't fit into newborn.

Next are great as they have the built in scratch mitts and I liked their baby socks too - these will be good for under babygros in the early days too. A knitted cardigan is great to put on with ease coats are hard to get their wee arms into.

I got some clothes given to me plus brought some from a variety of places. General advice is to not open new stuff until the baby is born as themln you can take it back if it is too small.

In my case if I hadn't been given clothes my baby would have drowned in most of the newborn stuff we brought for her. Next and Primark newborn are small sizes, while Boots is larger. A lot of shops do sell stuff with build in scratch mits.

Didn't bother with newborn or 1 month. Bought 0-3 from the start. Winter baby by the time they've got a vest on top doesn't matter if too long in the leg - they're not going anywhere.

But my family has a history of big babies!

I got 0-3 and one or 2 newborn. Was expecting a large baby but he came out tiny so had to send DH out for "small baby" ones which he was in for 4 weeks

I've found myself buying some pieces across all ages - some newborn, some up to 3 months and some 3-6. Everyone says they grow out of stuff so quick, it can make more sense to roll up sleeves for a couple weeks than buy something new every month. Plus family/friends will often buy bits (mine already has 10 little outfits/baby grows and I'm only 22 weeks!)

beccii161016 · 22/09/2018 05:12

I bought a fair bit of newborn as DS was estimated 8lbish. He was actually 6lb4 and newborn buried him, we had to go out the day after he was born to buy tiny baby which he needed for 3 ish weeks before newborn for a further 6ish. It's hard to say until baby is here but I'd buy at least 3 grows of each size just incase. As a PP said, if you leave it packaged you can always take it back if you don't need it

I would get a few bits in 0-1 and 0-3 and then stick up on some more when baby is here. DD1 was overdue but tiny so these were too big but that’s no big deal.

I would stick to one shop though if getting a variety of sizes though as there is no consistency and 0-1 in one shop will be the same as 0-3 in another!

I find M&S is great quality for the price but their stuff comes up huge.

Just had a look at the baby gros with built in scratch mits - Next, Primark, Boots and Asda ones all have them built in.

Charlottejade89 · 23/09/2018 12:49

I had one or two newborn sized sets and about 5 up to 1month sleepsuits and an outfit or two in that size too. my dd was 7lb 15oz but still fitted into newborn for about 3 weeks and 1month for 6 weeks. she's a shortie but solid lol. the 0-3 months drowned her until she was over a month old

owl89 · 23/09/2018 14:59

DS went straight into 0-3 months. He didn't fit in any newborn stuff. He was 9lb 3 oz when born. He had a couple of up to 1 month but these were tight after 1 week.

ThorsMistress · 23/09/2018 22:09

It’s difficult to say. We got 0-3 bits and upto 9lb. DS was born a tiny 5lb 10oz so we had to go and get tiny baby Smile

Hannahlouise4026 · 23/09/2018 22:49

Both mine were 7lb5 and 7lb2 and for the first couple of weeks wore tiny baby (I hadn’t bought any in that size but newborn was massive!) they definitely weren’t tiny, I’d say average size!

Thetimehascometo · 23/09/2018 23:50

My 4 month old DD is still in newborn🙈 however she was a 34 weeker and was drowned by tiny baby initially 🙊

Most places have built in scratch mits on baby grows now. I think only one of ours from John Lewis didn’t. However Tesco, Asda, next, M&S, mothercare all did 😊

For reference Tesco tiny baby is the smallest of the normal tiny baby clothes, and mothercare go down to 3lb. I’m sure you won’t need it but may be of use to someone reading this

firsttimebabybirther · 23/09/2018 23:56

First size or up to 1 month was the perfect size for my 9lb6 born DS , new baby and newborn was a complete waste of money as I had to get rid of it all Sad

OutPinked · 24/09/2018 10:04

Mine were all big babies so didn’t fit into newborn at all. I’ve only bothered buying 0-3 because the newborn things I bought DC1 didn’t get used.

usernotfound0000 · 24/09/2018 12:43

We bought newborn and up to one month, none of it fitted, DD was 7lbs so not tiny but we had to send family out to buy tiny baby and first size stuff. This time, we still have everything left from DD so I'll be packing a few of each size in the hospital bag in case we get a bigger one this time.

BigRedBoat · 24/09/2018 13:59

My dd was 6lb 12 with little twiggy legs for ages, she wore tiny baby and newborn size for several weeks, I'd get sleepsuits etc in a range of sizes, you can get some lovely ones for not too much money in supermarkets so then you should be all set whatever size your baby is.
