Should I contact my GP?

I'm fairly new to the health system here and don't know anyone personally who has given birth through the NHS, so I'm not sure how it all works.

I'm not even four weeks pregnant yet, only received a BFP today. But I have pre-existing health conditions and am unsure of what medication I should be taking. Should I try for a phone appointment with a GP?

You can let your surgery know you are pregnant and they wil book you in for. Booking appt with a midwife I suspect.

BlueUggs · 20/09/2018 10:05

But it may not be for a week or two, depending on your existing conditions....

Booking appointment with midwife is usually 8 weeks onwards, ring docs and they’ll refer you xx

You wouldn't normally see a gp that early on just let your surgery know so they can get a midwife to get in touch for a booking in appointment. If you have a pre existing condition though and worried about medication it may be worth seeing your gp. Congratulations Flowers

As your on existing medication you do need to see a GP. They can advise what you can continue taking and alternatives for ones you can't which the midwife can't do.

Thanks all! I have a telephone appointment with a practice nurse so hopefully he can answer my questions about meds.

A GP has previously mentioned I’d need to see a consultant if I became pregnant, so I might end up seeing a doctor throughout anyway.

Contact GP and go from there esp if you are on existing meds that may interfere with pregnancy.

I'd like to point out that in some areas you DO need to see the GP before the midwife. So it's worth ringing your GPs surgery to check this OP.

My area runs a "shared care" system between midwife and GP. You have two booking appointments - a short one earlier on with the GP (where they do a mini risk assessment) and then another with the midwife at 8-9 weeks with the full works.

If you don't see the GP you don't get referred for your 12 week scan. For some reason GP has to do this where I live (very odd).

Although I think my area is in the minority (and it's a rather annoying system IME!), but still worth checking how it works in your area.

Hi @Kescilly I remember you from the conception boards few months back. Congratulations on your BFP!!

I was on meds and went straight to GP who advised I should stop them so better to find that out. I wasn't even 4 weeks lol! She was able to refer me for my Booking In appointment. If there's a self referral form I'm sure they will advise you. Good luck!!

Kescilly · 20/09/2018 16:47

Hi @Angelmiracle, thank you! How are you doing?

The receptionist didn't say anything else when I told her I was pregnant. Should I call again tomorrow and ask what the general procedure is? Or ask the practice nurse tomorrow over the phone?

@Kescilly I'm good except for nausea and exhaustion right now! Hopefully another few weeks and I'll feel less sick but all a good sign at least.

Yeah sure check with practice nurse the procedure if you need to self refer for your Booking In appointment or if the surgery does it for you. And ask about medication or if you need to see GP about it? At the booking in they will then assess you to see if you need to be shared or fully consultant led.

Kescilly · 21/09/2018 13:13

Thanks @Angelmiracle, I didn't think I'd actually see a BFP so I spent more time reading about infertility than what would happen if I became pregnant. I have my phone appointment today, so hopefully that will get me sorted.

Glad that you're doing okay even with your symptoms. Smile
