I'm currently 28 weeks and had my GTT on Friday. I've been called this evening and told I've failed and my repeat bloods were 9.7mmol and therefore been diagnosed with GD. I'm in a tailspin. Please can anyone advise on what will happen? All MW said is that I'll be seen on Wednesday and she'll go through checking my sugars..

Hi I have GD. Basically I was given a blood sugar monitor and shown how to use it and then met a dietitian to discuss diet. I'm seen fortnightly and have regular growth scans which is lovely. I have also lost weight and am hoping to be slimmer after birth!

Same here. Monitoring blood sugars at the moment to see if they can be controlled with diet alone, if not then medication can be considered. Regular scans will check growth and discussions will be had about if delivery needs to be something different eg induction or c section depending on the size of baby. I'll need to be in the consultant led part of the delivery unit as will need constant monitoring but it all sounds fairly manageable and in hand since I got the diagnosis

I had this in my last pregnancy. Do your research. In most cases the diet recommendations they give you will spike your blood (they recommend cereal, but for most it's like kryptonite).

It is HARD work but you can do it. I normalised my pregnancy, went to 41 weeks and gave birth naturally in an MLU

Thanks ladies. I'm high risk anyway due to previous health issues. Just feel like it's the straw that broke the camels back at the moment.. but guess I just need to get my head around it. How often are the growth scans? I'll attach a pic of his 28 week scan, he's already quite big 🙁

I didn't have any. That website above will give you the absolute best info you can get. They also have a DB group for peer support. I would never have got through those three months without it.

Oh, and by the time I gave birth I was 10lb less than my pre pregnancy weight!!!

Hooli · 17/09/2018 19:24

Were you tested because he was measuring big??

Gemsie1984 · 17/09/2018 19:38

Well my BMI pre pregnancy was high, 39. I've lost three stone since conception and it's now 35. I've only gained 4lb so far in pregnancy and baby weighs almost 3lb.
GTT was routine in my trust, as far as I'm aware, although maybe triggered because of my BMI. Unsure in fairness. Thanks for the link..

Well done on the weight loss! My DD was on the 93rd percentile when she was born 10days early and I didn't have GD then. I haven't been able to get my sugars under control so am on metformin and insulin and would kill for a bowl of cereal! It's a faff but doable. Current baby is measuring at the bottom of the percentiles so I'm going to be discussing not being inducted 2 weeks early which is the current plan on Thursday as they did this with a friend with GD and her baby was only 5 Lbs! Hope the meeting goes ok and you feel better about it all soon,

Some people are just more at risk of it Gemsie. My SIL had it in 2 of her pregnancies, despite being absolutely tiny.

I don't have it, even though I have a BMI of over 30, but I'm still having a big baby.

If it helps, when my SIL had GD she just had to take her sugars a few times a day. She was diet controlled and didn't find it too difficult to manage. I'm sure they'll explain everything when you see the MW next
