Are changing tables and rocking chairs nursery essentials?

Hi there - I am 24+1 weeks along with my first and starting to kit the nursery out. The nursery is not huge and I dont want to kit it out with stuff I wont actually use. So my question is this. How essential are a rocking chair/ changing table in the nursery? Did you have them? If so did you use them? Were they a must have?

Let me know your thoughts as I keep going round in circles! Much appreciated!

thanks

Neither are essential IMHO. Had neither.

MrsBadger · 09/06/2007 21:19

absolutely not

cot and a chest of drawers and that#s about it
put the changing mat on the chets of drawers or on the floor

TheArmadillo · 09/06/2007 21:19

had neither. Didn't miss them.

Safer to change baby on floor (or on mat on bed if have stitches at first).

Rocking chair = no point at all.

beansprout · 09/06/2007 21:20

Not at all. You all have to do to b'feed is sit in a comfy chair. Got one of those already? There you go then!!

lisad123 · 09/06/2007 21:24

I had both
I used my changing table a lot, but had c section so was a good thing
I still have my chair now and have moved it into my room for my new bumpy.
They arent must haves but i certainly like having them

I had both too. I had a cot top changer (lays securely on top of the cot and can be removed easily). I loved using this as I ended up with emergency c section and I have a bad back, so was very useful.

The rocking chair I bought second hand for only £10. You don't have to buy new.

Hi I never had a chair but found the changing table a godsend, great for holding all the stuff you need in one place and saves bending down. Mine had a bath under the top which was a waste of time as it was such a hassle to empty it. So a basic one would do. The unit has been used as a bookshelf for my daughter since she outgrew it and it has been set up for no 2.

just used a changing mat on bed and rocking chair. no longer used it for feeding dd after i used it for the first time

it was wooden, had no seat cushion and i had stitches

Slim · 09/06/2007 21:31

No. Gave up feeding DS in any chair once I'd realised I could just sit up in bed. Changing mat on floor. Onkly problem is that DS now hates being changed on a table - screams blue murder if I have to change him while we're out

Thalia · 09/06/2007 21:31

We thought we would be able to get by without a changing table. After about 6 weeks of changing our new baby on her mat on a bed, we both had really bad backache. We didn't want to pay for a proper changing table and so bought a DIY wooden potting bench from Focus for £19.99. It is just the right height and wasn't a huge expenditure. It also is long enough to hold nappies, wipes and a few little things at the top. I'm not to sure about rocking chairs, I'd love one but don't have the space. Enjoy your baby when it comes !

allgonebellyup · 09/06/2007 21:32

NO! neither!

(they are for ponces)

chonky · 09/06/2007 21:32

No to rocking chair.

Yes to change table, but bought one from IKEA where it is a set of shelves to which you just temporarily add the change table part. Means that it can be part of your dc's furniture long after they're out of nappies. Not too expensive either.

mabel1973 · 09/06/2007 21:33

i had neither. they learn to roll before you know it so changing tables become dangerous! and fed on the sofa in front on the tv most of the time!

fransmom · 09/06/2007 21:33

who you calling a ponce?

lisad123 · 09/06/2007 21:34

The rocking/gliding chairs have come down in price a lot in last few years. You can picka good one up for £80. Maybe ask friends to pay towards it as part of pressie

Didn't have either. I tell you what is really really good though - those v shaped pillows from Argos for about £7...lovely to put behind your back when pregs and when bump arrives, ideal to put around tummy for breast feeding - I had two!

I'd also recommend a cheap footstool - you will want to put your feet up a lot - you can get them in IKEA for about £9...

Hope this helps!

bilblio · 09/06/2007 21:35

Definitely not.
Not that I've got kids yet... 6 weeks to go. But my mum was a childminder and brought up umpteen kids and managed without either. If you want a changing table make do with a changing mat on a chest of drawers, but personally I think a changing mat on a bed or the floor is much safer.

I am hoping to get a rocking chair, but only because I love them, and there's a charity shop near me that sells them for £15. I'm gutted because I went up there today to get one they've sold the 2 they had last week.
I will not be defeated!
If they were more than £15 or I didn't have an idea where it'll go when the baby gets bigger then I wouldn't spend the money.

fransmom · 09/06/2007 21:35

would've loved a glider chair - esp the one from john lewis that i made the msitake ot "just trying". sooooooooo comfy

NikkiBFG · 09/06/2007 21:35

I have a cosatto gliding/rocking chair and stool, and wouldn't be without them.

I didn't use it for the 1st few months as would always feed on the sofa or in bed, but as ds got older it has come in to its own. I wouldn't be without it.

foxybrown · 09/06/2007 21:37

I had a cheapo Ikea one changing table (with sides so couldn't roll off) which was good. I liked having one area for changing, topping & tailing, dressing, everything to hand and good storage.

Never had a rocking chair, so don't know if they are lovely or not (but I do know Kiddicare do some cheap deals on those slidy-rocking type things, but they seem so big).

mumfor1standfinaltime · 09/06/2007 21:39

Oh yes, def get a v shape pillow - great for feeding and resting!

lisad123 · 09/06/2007 21:40

Changing tables are only unsafe if you leave baby alone on table
There was no way I would have been able to change DD on floor after my section.
