I think I have pre-eclampsia :(

Can anyone tell me their positive pre-eclampsia stories?

I've been to the doctors today. Blood pressure is looking high and I have protein in my urine. Don't think I will be able to have my water birth now or even give birth in MLU. Very small change it isn't pre-eclampsia but I just have a funny feeling it is.

Can anyone offer any active? Any experience? I can't stop crying and feel so out of control.

I had it but I was expecting it as it runs in my family. I ended up being induced for other reasons but ultimately ended with a healthy baby.

MischaB · 14/09/2018 20:46

I'm really worried baby is going to be premature.

How far gone are you?

purpleme12 · 14/09/2018 20:48

I had it. Baby was 5 weeks early on the dot. Really small. But all ok better than they expected actually. Was induced

MischaB · 14/09/2018 20:49

@SnuggyBuggy 30 weeks. I know baby will be fine from this point with help but it's still a scary prospect.

I had preeclampsia with both mine. Was induced early for ds1 and he's now a happy, healthy 5 year old. I was on blood pressure meds from 32 weeks and induced at 36 weeks, as they couldn't control my blood pressure. I had mw appts twice a week and extra scans and monitoring. They really will keep a close eye on you and if you are at all worried, triage will always see you. In my experience, I was bored pathway so consultant led andcouldnt have a waterbirth and was in the consultant unit but both births were incredibly positive. Please don't get hung up on your birth experience. You'll still feel in control and be able to guide decisions. You can still have an active birth. How far along are you? What meds have they put you on? Honestly, it's not as bad as anything you're imagining.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/09/2018 20:52

It's definitely scary. My DM was about that when she was diagnosed with proteinuria and high blood pressure. They ended up just monitoring and she even went overdue but that was going n the 80s, don't know if they would do that these days.

SparkyBlue · 14/09/2018 20:59

I had it on both of mine but more severely on my first. I had several stays in hospital before delivery as they were keeping a very close eye on things. I ended up with c sections on both and both were premature and on blood pressure meds for a long time afterwards. I also had to stay in hospital for almost two weeks after my first baby as my blood pressure wouldn't settle and they didn't want to discharge me without it being fully under control with meds. That was something I really wasn't expecting to happen. Mind yourself OP it's an awful shock when it starts. Feel free to PM if there is any other stuff you want to ask

MischaB · 14/09/2018 21:10

I'm so gutted I can't explain. This whole pregnancy has been an utter nightmare.

I had this with DS from 20 weeks.
Lots of monitoring and total rest but it worked out fine.
DS was small when he was born but otherwise perfect

Ohb0llocks · 14/09/2018 21:19

I had it.

Lots of extra monitoring but no hospital stays.

I was induced at 37+4, and DS2 was 7lbs and healthy. I laboured in the bath on the induction ward, and then went from 4-10cm on the walk to the birth suite!

HairyAntoinette · 14/09/2018 21:24

Was a bit of a head fuck. I'd gone to see my mw who told me to go straight to hospital - where upon I was told I wouldn't be leaving without a baby!

It was a total shock because it was early I wasn't ready emotionally at all.

They tried to stabilise me but I was heading fast for full-blown eclampsia and I was induced... And had emcs. Baby in NICU for a few days just in case.

I didnt really have any comprehension of just how ill I was and I suppose adrenaline kept me going... Although I wish I'd slept!

Long term my kidneys are pretty crap and I was closely monitored with my second pregnancy but didn't develop it.

MischaB · 14/09/2018 21:29

Thanks everyone.

I'm buying a blood pressure monitor tomorrow and am going to do my BP twice a week when I wake up. My blood pressure has a tendency to go up when at the doctors. Holding on to a bit of hope!

I had it but it wasn't picked up for at least three weeks. When it was, I was immediately admitted to hospital and my baby was delivered that night, just before 37 weeks.
That might not sound great, but the point is, it turned out OK even though I was not monitored/treated as soon as I should have been. As they are already keeping an eye on you, you will get all the care you need. Granted, you won't get your water birth (I wanted that too), but it doesn't matter in the end.

Freshprincess · 14/09/2018 21:33

I had it with my DTs. Bed rest for two weeks then delivered At 35 weeks. They were small but perfectly healthy. I had a section but that was always on the cards because they're twins.

They were small and behind their real age in development terms up till about 18 months. Once they got to school there was no difference between them and their peers (they are also October babies so being the older ones helped).
All 6ft 3 of the smaller twin is currently hogging the TV and eating all the popcorn.

Hi OP - I had pre-eclampsia and like you, before I did I'd had all sorts of fantasies about giving birth in a midwife led unit and having a very earth mother water birth kind of experience. I'd known I had pre-eclampsia for a long time as I'd swelled up like a balloon (couldn't wear my rings for at least half my pregnancy and had to buy new shoes as none fitted ... had fun with pressure stockings as well in an attempt to get my swollen legs to go down) but I didn't get protein in my urine until very late in the day, which put the nail in the coffin on the dreams of the MLU birth. I was classed as high risk and monitored in hospital overnight about a week before I'd been booked in for an induction. Ended up going in for an emergency c-section after 24 hours of labour with very little progress - thankfully for me my labour pains were dulled by my waters not properly breaking but it was a proper wrench not to go through the full experience of a vaginal birth. I'd like to if I have another, if they'll let me, that is.

Anyway it's funny how huge a thing the birth is before you have your baby, and as the months go by after the birth, how small a thing it turns out to be. Other than hoping for a VBAC, if I have another child I'm not bothering with a birth plan as the birth will happen as it will and isn't interested in following any plans you might make beforehand! Nothing about the birth of my daughter was according to any plan I made - no water birth, emergency surgery in a different hospital to the one I'd wanted, they cut the cord without waiting - but I still had that amazing moment when they gave me my beautiful baby girl, and the year that's passed since then has been the best of my life. She lights up mine and my husband's world every day and seeing her grow has been an absolute privilege. The birth was just the long-ago start of it all.

I will say that the pre-eclampsia and having everything go so utterly opposite to how I wanted did give me the bloody mindedness to forge through with breastfeeding her even when I was extremely tempted to give up, though - it was the only thing I felt I had any control over. Breastfeeding bloody hurt and it was so freaking difficult to begin with, and I don't judge anybody that doesn't carry it on - had I had a birth experience closer to the one I'd wanted, I do wonder if I might have called it quits after the first few weeks - but I'm glad I stuck with it as it did get rapidly easier after that and I still enjoy those moments of closeness with her now. :)

Good luck OP, and I hope everything goes well for you.

Hi, I had pre-eclampsia at 28 weeks. I was admitted to the antenatal ward and stayed there for 7 weeks before they could no longer keep my blood pressure spikes under control and they induced. My dd was born at 35 weeks and although rather small (4lb2) she only had 10 days in NICU and is now a happy, healthy 18 month toddler. It isn't the end of the world (even though it might feel like it at the mo).
She was my 3rd baby (no problems with previous pregnancies) and to be honest, I quite enjoyed my hospital stay. I'd never have got so much rest at home Grin

purpleme12 · 21/09/2018 23:10

Awww mine was 35 weeks too! Mine was slightly smaller

Girlwiththearabstrap · 22/09/2018 02:05

It is a shock, but they will monitor you closely. It's a very variable and unpredictable condition so we can all give our experiences but it's no predictor as to what will happen and when. But to reassure You, I do have two healthy babies and have had it twice. First pregnancy developed it very suddenly and was induced just before 35 weeks. Second pregnancy I had a couple of hospital visits to be monitored but didn't develop it till labour (induced again). It's hard letting go of the type of birth you want but with kind and supportive staff I hope you can still have a positive experience.
