According to the NHS website you should avoid all types including vegetable as it contains listeria. I've craved it too!

SkippedALightFandango · 14/09/2018 15:35

Meat pate is a no because it’s made from liver.

dementedpixie · 14/09/2018 15:35

Also meat based pate is too high in vitamin A which can harm your baby

AlpineButterfly · 14/09/2018 15:36

I guess the high contents of something or other. In which case I'd just have a small amount. Be aware that you're making a calculated 'risk'

springmachine · 14/09/2018 15:37

I ate a bit of pate when I was craving it so much.

If I was craving it that bad I assumed there was something in it that I might have needed

I'm not a medical practitioner and am not giving advise to do this though.

I also made other decisions for myself such as eating at a sushi restaurant on occasion

dementedpixie · 14/09/2018 15:37

Sushi is ok in pregnancy as long as the fish was frozen beforehand

Fireba11 · 14/09/2018 15:42

I know we have to avoid liver so I'm assuming that's what the issue is? My mum said 'in her day' pregnant women were advised to eat liver for the iron, but it's now considered too high in vitamin a I think?

mamansnet · 14/09/2018 15:43

I had tinned pork pâté and defrosted sushi. Less chance of listeria that way.

Couldn't have done 9 months with neither!!

Fireba11 · 14/09/2018 15:44

I've heard the rice in sushi is an issue as well!

My cousin's wife in Australia is pregnant at the same time as me and told me that they're advised not to eat pre cut salad (bagged or in any restaurant etc).

FWIW I have eaten a small amount of pate and sushi while pregnant... And salami Smile

Stephisaur · 14/09/2018 15:46

It's not advised because it's too high in vitamin A, which can cause eye problems for the baby (IIRC).

I really want some, but it's not worth the risk for me.

kmreeve · 14/09/2018 15:46

I think it's to do with listeria poisoning... but I eat pate a lot when not pregnant and so far I'm alive. I'll happily eat mushroom/vegetable pate if it's do with the liver content.

I'll hold off my craving till I've spoken to midwife.. though I'm sure in about half hour I'll be craving something different anyhoo Grin

I don't buy the Listeria thing with veg based pates, how can onions/mushrooms/cream cheese be fine, even together on the same plate, but suddenly not when blended and made into pate? Confused

Onlyhappywhenitrains1 · 14/09/2018 15:50

I may be wrong but I think it's a legal requirement for all sushi fish sold in the UK to have been flash frozen to kill bacteria.

So as long as your only eating UK sushi your ok.

Onlyhappywhenitrains1 · 14/09/2018 15:53

@IHaveBrilloHair

I thought that too. But it might be to do with how long it's been sat.

You could always make your own vegetable pate to be safe.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/09/2018 15:59

Nah, how can Listeria only get into pate, yet nothing else, it doesn't make any sense.
The liver based ones is because of vitamin A, I get that, and also the Listeria with them too, but I'm sure veggie ones are safe.
Granovita do a nice veg one in a tin which has the texture of meat pate, it's lovely.

Rachelsholiday · 14/09/2018 15:59

I used to get smoked mackerel and mash it up with creme fraiche and lemon for a pate fix

CrabbyPatty · 14/09/2018 16:40

I had some and felt totally guilty and worried afterwards and it wasn't worth it. Liver pate is a risk because of vitamin A.

CrabbyPatty · 14/09/2018 16:40

And the best source of advice regarding what not eat is via the NHS website.

Angharad07 · 14/09/2018 17:45

Pâté should be fine if you have a small amount. Excessive amounts of vitamin A can be harmful but a lack of vitamin A can also be harmful. The guidelines are very strict and I think a bit of discretion is needed or else we’ll all turn into soulless incubators!

Sandstormbrewing · 14/09/2018 18:22

2 issues - listeria (a concern in all types of pate including fish and veg) and high vitamin A (only an issue in meat pate).

Personally I've had it twice in 19 weeks of pregnancy, both in restaurants. However I don't eat many other things with vitamin A in and it was freshly made so less chance of listeria.

milkjetmum · 14/09/2018 18:33

Vitamin a during pregnancy is associated with birth defects, hence the recommendations to avoid. Dont underestimate how much Vitamin a is in live, its a lot! Livers accomodate vit a so interesting fact if you ever find yourself strange in the artic is that polar bead and husky Livers are poisonous to humans due to their massive vit a content. You may have noticed that pregnancy Vitamin have no vit a in them. So avoid for sure, but if course most pregnancies are uneventful so dont sweat it if you've already done it, but i'd strongly advise against livers pate in pregnancy. Enjoy them after the birth!
