Trisomy Testing - what is high risk where you are?

Hi all,
I've just had my results from my combined my/blood tests and am 13wks pregnant today (I'm 37 and this is my second pregnancy- the first resulted in mc at 7 weeks). The tests came back with a low risk of t21 at 1/4646 (great, phew), and the t13/t18 came back as a higher risk of 1/838.

The nurse has advised this is considered moderate to high risk and I'm scheduling to have a NIPT next week, which is covered by my insurance as the risk is higher than 1/1000. I live in Switzerland, but come from the U.K. and I have found that if we were at home a risk higher than 1/150 is considered high risk and lower than 1/501 is considered low risk. So we would be low risk if we were at home... I'm obviously (probably unnecessarily) a little worried even tho the initial test show a fraction of a risk in reality - as the healthcare here deem it moderate-high risk.

My question is what is deemed high risk where you are? I cannot find any other stats outside NHS websites and a lot of info is where the risk is higher than 1/100.

Thank you in advance!

I got 1/185 for downs which was considered low risk. No further testing offered. I accept the risk factor.

I live in Spain and anything higher than 1/250 is considered high risk and you would be referred for further testing. I’m surprised at 1/1000, I know friends in the U.K. who have been very relieved with similar figures to what you had!

I agree @TruffleShuffles , in fact just after I got off the call to the nurse I actually reassured my husband that it was really low risk. But of course Google happened... that's why it's good to know what other countries consider high risk! I think here they have particularly high standards for a lot of pre-natal tests (maybe because of the high insurance premiums?!), for instance I have been told of people moving here mid pregnancy, and being told they have gestational diabetes, even tho they tested negative in their country of origin.

I'm in Scotland and when I had dc2 (aged 40) was told that anything below 1 in 151 was considered high risk.

I'm in Austria (probably very similar to Switzerland) and high risk is 1:300, intermediate risk is 1:300 - 1:1000. I'm quite sure it's dependent on healthcare...central European countries tend to have very solid health plans so there's more money for additional testing.

My own results (age 33) were 1:7000 T21 and 1:20000 for the other two. I still can't get my head around the fact that 1:1000 or even 1:100 is "high risk" in pregnancy...that's over 99% of something NOT happening :/.

I got 1:110 and was told anything lower than 1:150 would be referred. If I had your results I wouldn’t have bothered with further testing but the NIPT is much more accurate so worth having especially if you don’t have to pay. If I ever have another baby I am going to refuse the trisomy rests as it wouldn’t have changed my mind anyway and if we are lucky enough to afford NIPT then I will just have that.

Hope all goes well for you anyway!

Thanks everyone, I know I am very lucky to have the odds I do, and it's only the nurses comments about the risk level and encouraging the NIPT that are making me research things such as what countries consider high risk. It sounds like Central Europe just have extra high hoops to jump through for that extra piece of mind. If I were in the U.K. I wouldn't pursue the extra test, but it's covered by insurance here and after nearly three years of ttc I don't mind having the extra reassurance just to make the next six months less nail biting Grin

With DD I was 1:52. Offered Amniocentesis and assessed for it. If the test came back unequivocal I was to have CVS.

With DS I was 1:25,000 or something ridiculous. It's a 1:150 threshold here.

Thanks @Belletower , where abouts are you based?
