Maternity Nightie - giving birth

What is the protocol here? I usually just wear pyjama bottoms and an old t-shirt for bed. Never owned a nightie.
When in labour I’m wondering if I can get away with just wearing one of OH’s shirts instead of buying a nightie. They only just cover my ladybits though. Is that OK?
Then if I have to stay in hospital would I be comfortable in my usual PJs (have some with button down top which would help with breastfeeding?) or can I just wear an old t-shirt of OHs and a pair of knickers?

In fact, would I be on a ward with other pregnant people or do they have private rooms in which case could I just knock about in the nuddie? I really should ask to visit the Labour ward....

Oh, re the tenna lady, your mum might just be letting you know it's quite common to be a bit incontinent in pregnancy and after birth.

If either happen more than the odd dribble, do mention it to your midwife and you can be referred for physio.

But def get on with your pelvic floor exercises now

wejammin · 13/09/2018 13:30

For giving birth both times I was in the pool so just a crop vest. For the next week or so I exclusively wore very cheap black jogging bottoms and black vests or black button down stretchy tshirts. Black everything for the mess. For the first couple of days I found PJ bottoms were annoying for having to keep changing pads, cleaning myself etc, cos I had to totally remove them every time I went to the loo. I did put them on for visitors though Grin

It's honestly a good idea to take a nightie or dressing gown just in case you are not in one place all the time. I just took one of my mum's old ones since I don't wear them usually. In the end I had to wander to and from the loo with tissue between my legs and a monitor attached to baby's head -- I was glad of having some cover down there.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 13/09/2018 13:46

You basically need a small mattress between your legs post birth. They're the most uncomfortable things ever. Like 6x the thickness of a fucking sanitary pad

I have to wear maternity pads every month (as well as a super plus tampon) because of heavy periods. 😭😭😭

OP, will the T-shirt actually cover your lady parts by the end of the pregnancy?

I too, wear tshirts but my bump is getting so big now there's no way it's covering my fanny anymore.

I've got to spend 2 days on hospital with DS when he is born, I'm just buying some nursing nighties from Amazon. One arrived today - omg so comfortable! Why have I been forcing my bump into tshirts?!
I'm buying 2 more when I get paid.

Thismummyruns · 13/09/2018 13:53

I bought a cheap but nice nightie from primark for my first.

When it came to giving birth, I didn't give a sh*t and stayed in the vest top I went to hospital in and whipped off my underwear to jump in the birthing pool.

The nightie didn't cross my mind at all Grin

I just wore t shirt I arrived in for labour. CBA getting changed!! You'll not care when the time comes.

Wore normal shorts and tshirt PJs on the ward for bed and got showered and dressed when my husband arrived in the morning. I find buttoning and unbuttoning a pj top for BfIng a bloody pain, especially at the beginning when feeding a lot. Much easier to just lift your top up and pull your bra down.

I doubt you'll want to parade about naked even if in a single room as the cleaner will be in, care assistants with your meals, doctors rounds, medication rounds, observation rounds, visitors walking past, hospital radio sometimes call in, etc etc. It's hardly like you'll be alone! Plus you'll be bleeding quite heavily just after birth . Just wear normal tshirt and some kind of bottoms and massive pants.

chloechloe · 13/09/2018 14:00

Am I the only person who actually gets dressed on the maternity ward!? Admittedly nothing fancy, but each time I managed to put on a pair of leggings and a (bum covering) top. With all the coming and going of nurses, visitors and other people’s visitors I’d rather not be knocking about in my PJs all day.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 13/09/2018 14:11

Chloe, after the first few hours of rest, yeah I just wear jogging bottoms and a vest top.

I don't like hanging around in pyjamas either.

Firsttimer1234 · 13/09/2018 14:19

I bought a nightie but never had time to put it on! They gave me a hospital gown that I sort of had draped over me. I was pretty much just in my maternity bra. I stayed in hospital for two weeks on transitional care. I was fine and was discharged after a day. So I got up and dressed every morning. Just sports leggings and a top. Made me feel better. There was a lady on my ward that wore an oversized t shirt and it was a sight to see her bag of wee swinging about every time she moved 🙈

PrtScn · 13/09/2018 14:37

Hadn't thought about the shirts & t-shirt not covering my ladybits towards the end of my pregnancy. I expect not then, if they only just cover now!

I'm loathe to buy a nightie I'll never wear again, but I guess it'll be peanuts to buy in the grand scheme of things and sounds like it'll probably need chucking after anyway. Will look for a cheapo one. My mum is only 4ft 9 so one of her nighties would just about cover my boobs.

I am most certainly not looking forward to bleeding after pregnancy. I'm really enjoying not having any periods at the moment. I have cervical erosion and fibroids and felt like I used to literally be on the verge of bleeding to death every month (been on a repeat prescription of iron and tranansemic acid for longer than I can to remember and the latter does bugger all). Not having to empty my moon cup and change my pad every hour has been bliss, although I seem to have substituted getting up every night to sort myself out with having to get up a few times in the night for a pee instead!

I bought nighties for being on the ward and for giving birth.. but when it came to the birth part I whipped everything off and just had a cotton crop top on.

You really won't care less.. I thought I would but I didn't. A big shirt of DH's sounds fine to me.

lifechangesforever · 13/09/2018 14:42

But as others have said.. good comfy pyjamas and dressing gown for being on the ward after.

Angelmiracle · 13/09/2018 14:57

I got a button down cotton nighty from Tesco. They stick baby under your nighty for skin to skin after birth so it was handy for that and breastfeeding. Didnt get stained so I kept it and will use it this time around. Its a sentimental nighty now lol. Nursing vest top and black pjs on after.

Nothisispatrick · 13/09/2018 15:09

I’ve just packed a few roomy t shirts and two sets of pjs. I’m aiming to use the birthing pool so won’t be wearing anything on the bottom anyway.

pastabest · 13/09/2018 18:43

For anyone looking for maternity/nursing pyjamas I loved these from next. I wish I had bought them earlier in my pregnancy as they were so comfortable, but they were also fab for breastfeeding in on the ward afterwards

PasstheStarmix · 13/09/2018 18:45

Asda maternity nighties are sooo comfy, I made sure the neck was really roomy and pulled down easy or buttons to make skin to skin and breast feeding easier when I was knackered

PasstheStarmix · 13/09/2018 18:46

I recommend short or no sleeves as the wards are so bloody hot

cholka · 13/09/2018 20:31

Hospital is hot hot hot hot hot! My house is not very hot at all, so all my pyjamas are thick brushed cotton types - very bad idea. Get light ones or you'll be sweaty as well as bloody!
You won't care what you're wearing for labour. A couple of changes of clothes is a good idea as there will be a lot of mess!

knottybeams · 13/09/2018 20:59

DD - highlighter pen pink sports bra (was in the pool then theatre.
DS - jojo maternity frock, after the first time I thought I'd have more time to get changed!
