Height of fundus measurement

Is the height of the fundus measurement any indication of the size of the baby? If I am measuring exactly right for my dates does that just mean that the fundus is the right size or does it mean that the baby is about the right size too? Or could I have a correctly-sized fundus but an overly small or large baby inside it?! Hope that makes sense!

Ok if I am correct your fundus indicates approx how many weeks you are.

the height in centimetres should equal the number of weeks pregnant you are, until around 36 - 37 weeks, when the baby can start to drop down into the pelvis, and the measurement reduces a bit

as long as your baby is growing nicely, rather than measuring suddenly smaller or larger, and is consistent, then not to worry

a lot of threads on here about measuring big / small, followed by growth scans , and quite often, average sized babies!!

it is all based on averages which means some babies will , by definition, be smaller or bigger

but the right size for them !

in theory

nb my midwife measured me as 39cm when i was 29wks

panic ensued but scan at hosp revealed him to be a mere 4 weeks ahead of himself

Lulu: "as long as your baby is growing nicely, rather than measuring suddenly smaller or larger..." - this is what I am wondering about though, if the fundus measurement only measures the fundus, and not specifically the baby inside, then how do I know what my baby is measuring? The 12 and 20 weeks scans would then seem to be the only indication of the size of the baby. Unless HoF measure is actually an indication of baby size.
I'm asking because gest. diabetes was an issue for me last time (although DS was perfectly average size) so I'm curious as to whether there's any way to check that the baby isn't too big now ie. could I have a 'textbook' fundus (I measured 25cm at exactly 25 weeks) yet my baby could be big inside the uterus?

if you are concerned about GD. then as long as you are having your wee tested for sugar, and the midwife is aware, then it should be picked up on, IMHO , and non medical opinion, i should think in the absence of any evidence of GD and a fundal measurement that correlates with how far along you are, then your baby is an average size....also, if you carry lots of fluid, i imagine that makes a difference, but it sounds like all is well, and average sized!

do you need to know how big your baby is? if there are indications that baby is not growing well, or getting too big, then hopefully it should be picked up on

Thanks Lulu! Your wisdom is, as ever, much appreciated! No, I don't actually need to know how big the baby is, I was just curious because I wondered how they keep a check on the size of the baby if there are no more scans after 20 weeks (with last pg I had one scan a month towards the end to keep a check on the size).

See alot of people say fundus height is a load of cobblers, but it wasn't for me.

I measured 4 weeks bigger all the way through from being about 22 weeks and ds was born @ 38 weeks weighing 9lb 6oz, so they certainly guessed right in saying he was big!

lulumama · 08/06/2007 22:11

no worries, tinkjon...as long as you attend your appts, have your wee tested and the midwife palpates you, then any issues should be picked up x
