Two heartbeats on the Doppler?! If this even possible?!

I’ve had my 1st scan and she could only see one baby, although she accidentally turned the scanner around the other way and for a split second I thought there was two! Grin she wasn’t the friendliest, so I didn’t even bother to ask if there was one or two or any questions at all. She just seemed to want to get me over and done with.

I have a fetal Doppler at home. I purchased one with my second son as his movements were always irregular and I was being monitored a lot towards the end and felt it helped reassure me at times.

Anyway, I’ve picked up two heart beats (I think)
I know you can get an echo, I know also I can hear my own heart beat and the placenta, but this was REALLY strange.

One heart beat read 150bpm, the other “heartbeat” was 130-135bpm. Is it possible the echo could be this different in beats?

I have my scan next week, so I will be sure to ask if there is only the one Wink has anyone ever had this with their Doppler or has anyone had twins missed?!

Please, anyone, respond! I’m having a moment of panic !

Just to also add, while trying to find my baby’s heart beat, I heard and noticed it was strange and it was almost too much noise.. not any whooshing and it wasn’t my heart beat as I kept checking mine to see if it was the same rhythm.. and that’s when I “came across another heartbeat” after moving it along..
I’m sure there is a logical explanation so pleaseee anyone Grin

It could be the cord you're hearing? The cord, placenta, baby and your own heartbeat all sound different and are all possible to pick up.

Also you can pick up the baby's heartbeat from different parts of their body - so you might be getting a head and then the feet or whatever, depending on how far along you are.

I'm sure the midwife would be able to tell if there were 2 babies though?

N1d0r13 · 12/09/2018 20:55

Ahh I didn’t even think of the cord too!

I’m sure the midwife would have picked up on it but you just hear some stories where twins were/are missed til the 20 week scan so it got me worrying! Hmm
Not that twins would be a bad thing, definitely a blessing!! But with a 3 year old and a 10 month old already, twins would make it very interesting Grin

Don't use a home Doppler. Kicks Count are trying to get them banned as mums-to-be pick up heartbeats (usually there's) and assume baby is fine, when they should be going to hospital to get checked properly. If in doubt, see a trained midwife - they know what they are listening out for. Take care x

Please checkout the Kicks Count Campaign and don't rely on dopplers for any form of reassurance. Quite frankly, if you can't find a heartbeat, it's too late - if you're worried get checked.

My midwife found three heartbeats with DS1. All sounded slightly different as the Doppler was in a slightly different position. DS1 was only one baby. As others have said Home Doppler’s are not that helpful.

thank you for your responses.
I would never rely on a Doppler when it comes to my baby’s health. My second son I was monitored a lot and ended up being induced because of lack of movements. I just felt hearing his heart beat helped whenever I wasn’t at the hospital but I would never rely on it and would never suggest anyone should.

Thank you again all of you Grin

It's fine to use a doppler in the early stages, because unfortunately if you did miscarry at that point they couldn't do anything anyway. It's risky to use them after 24 weeks as there is a high chance of false reassurance delaying help which could save a distressed baby.

I stopped using mine once I could feel movement.
