Heartburn misery

I am at my wits end with heartburn and really hoping someone has some miracle cure for it (wishful thinking)
For the past 3 weeks, I have CONSTANT Heartburn. Everything I eat, everything I drink hurts, hot & cold you name it. It doesn't just hurt my throat or chest it burns the inside of my mouth and tongue.
My appetite is now non-existent because I'm terrified to eat which is turn is making me poorly cause my blood sugar levels keep dropping. I ate a bloody banana and guess what it burnt my mouth I mean c'mon!
Doctor prescribed gaviscon chewables cause the liquid makew me sick which gives all of about 15 mins relief before it all fires up again.
I'm not sleeping at night because it's so bloody painful.
Doctor looked at me like I was mad when I told him the inside of my mouth felt burnt, I'm sure he thinks I'm making it up.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice. Tia x

Ouch. I suffered terribly too.

Have you tried ranitidine tablets? You can buy them over the counter and are ok in pregnancy, or you can ask for them on prescription. There is another one which is a good alternative but prescription only - think it's called omeprazole but sure someone will be along to suggest it soon anyway!

In the meantime do you sleep propped up? Not on pillows as that will make you slouch and probably make it worse. If you can, tilt your bed or mattress so your head is a few inches higher than your feet.

Honestly, it disappears the moment your baby is born. Not much consolation at the moment but instant relief to look forward to.

Oh it’s awful isn’t it - and I haven’t had it as bad as you describe. Liquid gaviscon generally works for me. It maybe won’t touch the sides, but have you tried chewing gum? I find that helps, it’s something to do with the extra saliva. And I’m sure individual foods set each one of us differently, ie I realised that muesli in the morning which I used to eat religiously made heartburn really bad, but bland cereals like special k or Cheerios are better. I have a feeling I’ve read on here people getting prescriptions for medication like omeprazole, maybe worth returning to gp or a different gp to discuss. Sympathy Flowers

I haven't tried anything other than the prescribed gaviscon chewables.
I told the doctor all the burns and paine and had hoped that he would give me something that would last a little longer than 15 mins and i guess had hoped he would give me something that I couldn't buy over the counter as Its obviously only going to have short term relief. He gave me enough for 6 days which lets face it- isn't gonna last me lol.
I sleep propped up and it does help to a degree.
I just feel like I'm at a loss tbh it's making me so miserable

Omeprazole was my friend in both pregnancies. Go back to your GP.

ChortleFace88 · 10/09/2018 20:50

Ive been on omeprazole for a couple weeks and honestly it’s a life changer. I was waking up in the night with stomach acid in my mouth.

Go back to your GP and request it ASAP.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 10/09/2018 20:51

Ranitidine liquid is better. And some other tablets available otc that my pharmacist recommended. No use to you I know as I can't remember the name but have you asked a pharmacist? How far along are you?

Defnotunique · 10/09/2018 20:51

Liquid remedies make me sick - childhood issues -can't take any liquid medicines lol.
I think im gonna have to see this prescription through - the remaining like 3 days lol and go back.
I think- where it burns as soon as it hits my mouth it makes me reluctant to eat/drink anymore but I know I have to.
I was told about 8 years ago that I have a hiatus hernia - which makes heartburn even worse, but not even sure if thats actually the case or not cause nobody has ever given me anything for it or discussed it as such.

A combination of omeprazole, chewable not liquid fruit flavoured cheapey gaviscon alternatives, sleeping on a proper large reflux wedge pillow and having an ice lolly when it comes up and sticks in my throat in the night is just about getting me enough sleep to cope.

Defnotunique · 10/09/2018 21:13

I think ill try and get an appointment tomorrow for the omeprazole as that seems to be the general consensus between you all.
The doctor honestly looked at me like i was asking for the earth.... I just want to be able to eat and drink and preferably sleep lol.
I've managed 3 mouthful of plain pasta tonight and that's it. Heartburn is off the scale. 3 Bloody mouthfuls!!!!
Where I've barely been eating, I've passed out a couple of times & also had extreme blurred vision which mw put down to sugar levels.
It's just awful.
To the person who suggested chewing gum -is love to be able to tolerate the strength of the mint on my tongue lol, the gaviscon chewables are painful enough.
I feel like I'm falling appart. Lol. Thank you for all your replies x

Blue25654 · 10/09/2018 21:30

Omperzole is the only thing that works for me.

NotTakenUsername · 11/09/2018 00:00

Have you tried crunching ice cubes?

feliciabirthgiver · 11/09/2018 00:12

Yes defo push for prescription but do try remegel chewable tablets, I always used to keep a packet in my handbag for emergency use!

headstone · 11/09/2018 01:31

I feel your pain, I cannot eat an evening meal some nights for the pain and sickness. I’m 34 weeks and have only gained 3kg this pregnancy. It feels like having a gastric band. Baby is growing fine though according to a scan,
I take gaviscon and metoclopamide. I cannot eat anything to greasy either.

Defnotunique · 12/09/2018 12:31

So was prescribed ranitidine. And it has helped massively.....in making me go to the toilet 8 times in a row lol. Grin literally turning my insides out tmi sorry!!!
It has helped with some of the heartburn though thankfully.
But now docs are worried that it could be pointing towards pre eclampsia because of all my other symptoms.
Just waiting till 2pm to get results x
