question for SPD sufferers

Hi guys,

I think I may have the beginnings of SPD but am not sure. I went to my pregnancy yoga class on tuesday and on the wed for a long walk with dh. On the thursday morning I woke up and could feel pain in my pelvic region, a bit like it was bruised. This morning lifting my right leg to put my clothes on felt uncomfortable. Is this the start of spd or have I just overdone the exercise?

I am also worried that the yoga poses we are doing in class will make this worse as we do lots of wide leg stance/ opening of the pelvis/squatting type manoeuvres. Should I stop doing these?

thanks xx.

I suffered needlessly with this excruciating condition during my first 4 pregnancies, as my midwife, quite frankly did not believe in it!! It appears that some do and some don't!
I got a new midwife when the usual one was on holiday and I mentioned it to her, well I didn't have to say much as she spotted it a mile off as I had such difficulty getting up off sofa, walking and all movements where just too painful to bear.
She immediately phoned the local hospital's physiotherapy dept, and got me and appointment for the following morning! The PHYSIOTHERAPIST gave me one five minute session on that day, and I went back for 2 more five minute sessions in a couple of days of each other to finish off the course! After the 1st session the pain eased immediately, but physiotherapist adviced me to go for other 2 just to make sure.
I am now pregnant with 7th baby & since the physio have been fine ever since. Please don't suffer like I did. The treatment is 100% pain free by the way, you just sit there!! It feels a bit like a tens machine actually. Please sort it out, as it will only get worse. Good Luck xxxx

Heres a few tiops:

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

SPD ? During Pregnancy

? Wear a support ? if you cant get hold of a pregnancy support, then you can wear a maternity swimsuit or tie some old sheeting around you pelvis, you can also use a sarong.
? Ironing and Hoovering will worsen the pain ? try not to do these.
? Take stairs one at a time
? Don?t overreach or stretch if possible
? Paracetamol generally don?t help ? try a hot wheat pack instead
? Use a pillow in between your knees when you sleep or get a pregnancy support pillow which you can curl around ? try to keep the pelvis in line
? See a physiotherapist or chiropractor
? Keep your legs together
? Try not to lift anything too heavy ? especially if you are not wearing a support

SPD ? In Labour

? Don?t let anyone put your legs in stirrups ? you could end up with a split pelvis
? Don?t let anyone hold your leg back to push ? you could end up with a split pelvis
? Try to stay upright or in water ? as this alleviates some of the pressure
? Wiggle your hips if your labour pains are in your back, but don?t over sway
? Put ?SPD Sufferer? in you birth plan so your mw?s are aware

SPD ? After Birth

? You may feel immediate relief from the pain ? however this doesn?t always last. Your pelvis is still ?loose? and this can cause problems months/yrs after. To try and minimise this from happening wear a support for a few days/weeks and see a physio/chiro after if possible.
? All of the ?during pregnancy? notes still apply for the first few weeks.
? There are homeopathic remedies (such as calc phos) which may help the healing process. See a homeopath.

please don't aggravate it ladies. Not meaning to freak you out but I still have bad attacks nearly 5 years after my last son was born.

Be careful with yourselves x

I had SPD from 12 weeks pg with ds (now 3)and the physio was useless. All she did was advise me how to walk etc. It did nothing to help with the pain. I would definately visit an osteopath if I get it again. I used to get a clicking sound which I imagine was my pelvis and it was quite disturbing. Most of the time the pain was more searing than a bruised type of pain but I suppose it can vary from one woman to another. Those of you who went swimming - did you find backstroke ok? I am better at that than front crawl.

Dont do what I did - it went after birth so after 6 weeks (I had a c section) I did skipping on a skipping rope to "get fit". Dumbest thing I ever did - the SPD pain came straight back. DD now 11 months and I still avoid any high impact activity like running. Indeed if I do run it comes back. Have found that if I'm careful its pretty much gone apart from the odd twinge.

When I told my doctor about SPD he had never heard of it and advised me to do pelvic floor exercises. Try and get a referral to a physio or find a competent midwife who know about this.

The level of ignorance in the medical community about this condition is depressing.
