Swimming in the sea?

Hey! I am currently 12+4 and at about 14 weeks I'm off on holiday to Croatia. We have an island cruise booked which has stops for swimming. This was all booked months ago before I was pregnant.

I was really looking forward to this, but was discussing it with a friend yesterday who said she didn't think it would be safe to do the swimming bits because of bacteria in the water getting in the vagina :/

It seems over the top to ring the midwife about this (but I dunno? Maybe I should??) so I wanted a bit of advice. Basically, would you do it? Or think it's dangerous? It didn't even occur to me that it might not be safe because swimming is recommended generally! But I guess that's in a clean, chlorinated pool?

Opinions please!?

According to an article on google it's fine as long as you try and avoid swallowing any sea water as it can cause stomach upset. It also said to avoid large waves.

I would advise slathering on the sun lotion too as your skin becomes extra sensitive in pregnancy and you want to stay hydrated also.

Enjoy!

It's absolutely fine!

Your cervix is completely closed so nothing is getting through there. Your friend is being ridiculous.

One of my favourite memories of our holiday when I was pregnant is swimming in the sea on the Devon coast on a blazing day, with our dog (who was very surprised to see his human in the water with him Grin). Enjoy your holiday and your lovely swim!

Your friend is batshit.
Perfectly normal to swim in tne sea when pregnant or otherwise.

eurochick · 08/09/2018 09:06

It's safe. Your friend is odd. I holidayed in the Maldives when pregnant and spent most of my time in the sea as it was lovely and cool.

I went to Spain at 32 weeks pregnant and swam and snorkelled in the sea. I just stayed close to the shore as I got exhausted easily, no other issues.

SoyDora · 08/09/2018 09:12

I have done plenty of sea swimming while pregnant.
Your friend is odd! Surely that would mean you couldn’t have baths etc?

EleanorOliphant · 08/09/2018 09:13

I was encouraged to swim in the local pool in later stages of pregnancy as it took the strain off my body. Can’t imagine there is less bacteria in a pool than in the sea. Enjoy and relax whilst you can. Your friend is a bit mad.

Your friend is looking for problems that don't exist and is going to find life very difficult if they want to control it to that degree,
Have a lovely time

surreygirl1987 · 08/09/2018 14:28

Seriously? Your friend is very badly informed and should research thinfs properly before spouting off advice which are incorrect.

It's absolutely fine and in fact swimming is great exercise when you're pregnant so go for it! Your baby is well protected from any bacteria so don't worry about what she said about the vagina thing! That said obviously try and swim at cleaner beaches if possible... blue flag award etc... but that's sensible whether pregnant or not!

Mississippilessly · 08/09/2018 14:30

As long as your waters are intact you are absolutely fine. Go for it!

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 08/09/2018 14:33

It is fine, your cervix is sealed. Just stay well hydrated and be extra careful with the suncream.

Natality rate in my (hot) home country would be null!
