GD - how soon should I get tested for it when I have ALL the symptoms at 10 weeks?

The title above really...I was wondering why my hands kept getting pins and needles and going numb, so googled it and it appears to be a v common symptom of GD - and the other symptoms such as dry mouth, fatigue (altho we all have that lol) and excessive thirst, I have too. I had my blood tests this last week but not sure if they test for it then or only later on in pregnancy? I'm not sure whether to go to the doctors now or wait and see if they contact me...and I'm sat here getting in such a stupid stew over it :( can anyone help?! Not sure if I'm just completely overreacting....

The bloods at your first appointment do not test for GD. It's a very specific blood test which involves fasting and has been offered to me at 20 something weeks as diabetes is in my family. If you have concerns now then I would call the midwife and see what they suggest.

I had all these symptoms plus high BMI plus baby measuring v big at 20 weeks and I didn't get a GTT til around 24 weeks - asked if I should have it earlier and was told no. Results were negative.

Stephisaur · 07/09/2018 23:14

I don’t think you can get accurate results until around 24 weeks, so I don’t think they’ll test you until then x

To be fair most of the symptoms you've described can be attributed to other issues such as general pregnancy or carpal tunnel syndrome.

They will test for it earlier if there is glucose in your urine. That's the easiest way for them to spot it.

AaaaaaarghhhWhereAreMyKeys · 07/09/2018 23:32

Have they tested your urine recently? If too much glucose shows up then they’ll do the GTT fasting blood test.

Though it’s quite normal to feel extremely tired at 10 weeks even without GD. Pins and needles are not.

If you’re worried I’d speak to the midwives/GP and get your urine tested again just to be sure.

Also, in the mean time it wouldn’t do any harm to keep an eye on your diet and avoid all the naughty sugary stuff.

For me they left a 12 week gap between appts because it’s not my first. Was diagnosed at 28 weeks and I’m feeling v let down that there wasn’t the opportunity to pick it up sooner. I think missed all the signs, putting it down to the heat instead.

I had extreme thirst in early pregnancy and all the other symptoms you describe. I had a GTT and it was negative.

Ok, thanks all! They tested my urine on Tuesday but I guess might have not got the results back yet anyway. I will just be patient I think, and if it gets worse I'll call. Stupid pregnancy brain got into such a flap last night lol thinking all the worst possible things...!!!

The urine test is immediate so you would know.

Emma765 · 08/09/2018 09:44

Where I am they test your urine there and then, then pour it away. It's far more common in the 2nd half of pregnancy which I guess is another reason they wait.

I also had dry mouth, fatigue and excess first at the beginning of my pregnancy and the tingling hands can be carpal tunnel which is common in pregnancy too.

Talk to your midwife and also try to follow a healthy diet low on sugar and carbs if you're worried.

No, I had to drop my sample off at the hospital to go to the lab - not at the doctors, they do it differently in my area for some reason. Struggling to eat much atm because of morning sickness anyway, but hopefully that will pass soon and I can start eating healthier again.

You could also ask your GP to test your blood sugar HC something or another to see if you're type 2.
