Pregnancy diet

Just wondering what your views are and what advice you have had re your diet while pregnant.

I’m in 2nd tri and a colleague at work is a bit further along than me and seems so healthy in terms of habits! She does yoga every morning, she is eating healthily, avoiding sugar. She sort of tuts at me for having sugar most days! She said her MW told her to eat less sugar.

I told my MW today and she said not to worry. She said I have low BMI and everything in moderation is fine. She also said not to compare to other people (altbo think I may be doing that now??)

I don’t eat too badly. Since about 3 months I’ve started eating sugary foods again but not excessively. I am trying to snack more on fruit rather than chocolate. I know some people like to avoid fruit due to natural sugar...

TIA

If I were you, I wouldn’t beat yourself up. I usually eat really healthy but have felt so sick the past two months I haven’t been able to stomach any of the things I usually like! I’ve gone from having salads for lunch to sandwiches and crisps every day. I keep stressing about it but people are telling me not to and that you’ve just got to do what your body needs you to do! I’m sure the odd bit of sugar isn’t going to do you any harm. She should keep her judgemental tutting to herself!

I think you’re right. I am going to try to cut down a bit on the sugar and junk food but I don’t think my diet is too bad. Like you say; you have to eat what you fancy! Baby will take what it needs.

I have been beating myself up too...before pregnancy I was a gym freak and ate relatively healthy. I cant stop eating and snacking on junk..although I make sure I have some fruit too. I spoke to MW at my 31 week appointment and she said little person will take whatever they need from you. Aslong as you have some fruit and veggies along the way I wouldn't worry too much about your diet. Your body would soon tell you if it needed something else or something was wrong xx

@AshBluex I get it! I suspended my gym membership early on as I was clearly not going to go! I keep saying I need to at least walk more so will try that and also I am trying out pregnancy yoga

I just got the usual advice of avoiding too much junk food, eating fruit/veg/grains etc and avoiding alcohol.

Hopefully your colleague isn't actually tutting at you! I kept up my exercise routine (albeit modified) up to my due date and didn't really eat much junk food because I don't eat like that anuway. And I did get accused of being judgmental by another pregnant colleague who didn't have the same kind of lifestyle.

This topic is a huge pet peeve.
I hate how precious people get over what they eat all of a sudden when they get pregnant. In the first 10ish weeks baby doesn't even get a thing from you. And from then on it takes everything it needs even if you so much as only look at fruit and veg nevermind actually eat it.
I don't change my diet, I eat what I want when I want. I think its completely fine to eat crisps and snacks and chocolate so long as that's not what you're having for breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything in between. And if it is, so be it. Who has the right to make people do and eat a particular way.
Everything in moderation is 'healthy', and those who judge need to stop and realise they need to be more concerned about what's going on in their life than other peoples.
There are so many contradictory studies that show having this and that is healthy. There is no possible way any human can follow along to be the scientific definition of healthy.an you imagine all the supplements and fasting?!
Rant over 😁😁

MW was quite realistic and said “everything in moderation” which I what I think I’m doing to be honest

But I do think there’s limited guidance in pregnancy, unless you google everything but then you come across all sorts of views!

So I was interested to know whether I was missing something

I would not worry too much. Your colleague has obviously had a very easy pregnancy with no early symptoms, but for the rest of us who can only keep down crackers and mashed potato, it is exhausting. I planned to do the usual yoga and healthy eating (I usually eat pretty well), but have felt so rotten it just hasn't happened. I've only managed a walk at lunchtime and have counted housework as exercise! I also have taken to eating boiled sweets all of the time for the nausea, and couldn't have managed without them. Plenty of people with HG who have lived on thin air have had healthy, smart babies, so don't worry.

I'm starting to feel better now, so will try some exercise to tone up. Did a lot of work in the garden yesterday, so I'm including that too.

Our mothers were probably not given a great deal of advice around healthy eating years ago and probably ate what they wanted. Fried and convenience food was eaten a lot in the 70's and 80's (it was in our house) and most people turned out ok. Although a healthy diet is certainly better than junk.

AliceRR · 09/09/2018 09:18

I think you’re right. I ate lots of sweets in first trimester to help stop me feeling sick and also when I had a bitter taste in my mouth.

I am going to try to eat more healthily, as that will probably help my energy levels too, but I’ll still treat myself and need to not worry about what other people do

I ate lots junk food b/c it stayed down. Can't tolerate food purists. That must be nice to be perfect, but impossible for most of us.
