Hey lovelies,

I am due to start my first year of university as a child nurse.

Aka student nurse.

Has anyone else experienced this?

How did you find this?

Was it possible?

Unsure whether to defer also...

Others experiences would be much appreciated.

Thank you xx

I would say if you can! I got pregnancy in first year (studying biology) and took a year out between first and second year, personally I wouldn't need have been able to cope with a newborn and studying, I also have a friend who got pregnant while doing a nursing degree and she's on her final placement now, so it is doable but we both took about a year out of uni x

I fell pregnant in my final year nursing degree. I was lucky that I finished uni in the September and ds was born in October tho. I just had 6 months out before I got my first job. It was 11 years ago though.
There was another girl who was pregnant in second year she just stepped off for a year then rejoined with the intake the following year xx

When are you due @miagul12 ? X

All my friends who got preg on our nursing course dropped out. Not sure if they went back eventually or not.
Its hard work with placements, especially if you're holding down a job to pay for uni and accommodation too. But if you can do it, by all means go for it!
Also, found a lot of the child nursings who had kids/wanted kids found it too emotional and transferred to adult nursing.

I'm a student children's nurse at Brighton uni.
I will just take a year off and start back exactly where I left off but with the next years cohort.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 05/09/2018 22:47

I have to say the opposite of Emma though, most of us have kids and we all love the nursing degree.

We all agreed that we would never in a million years consider adult nursing. And he adult student nurses say the same about us!
Children don't scare you off children's nursing.

I had DD during my third year. It was 17 years ago now and I was a diploma student on the bursary. I missed an 8 week placement and had to make up 4 weeks at the end. I still qualified with all of my cohort. Another student had her baby 8 weeks after I did and she deferred for 6 months but she was seconded and paid by her trust so she could afford to- I didn’t qualify for any maternity or other benefits so took the minimum time- I had 4 weeks holiday from my paid job and went back when DD was 3 weeks old.
It was so hard at the time but I had no choice and it would have been awful to have wasted 2 years to then drop out so I just struggled on until the end.

Not nursing, but ds was months old when I started my teaching degree, so placements required obviously. Hard work but I managed it.

I had a baby half way through my course. I got maternity pay which was good. I had to take a while year out and join the year below. Coming back to do the final year was tough but my mum helped me out when I had placement. I didn’t find the essay writing too difficult with a toddler. If you have support/ help it’s doable.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 06/09/2018 07:46

Difference between teaching placements and nursing placements though, is that placement shifts can start at 7am and end at 8pm. There's night shifts and weekend. Or shifts like my friend currently has 10am-10pm.
So really the only similarity between teaching and nursing is the word 'placement'...

And thank goodness for those of you who don't change their minds about it thirdchildfourthpile!
I think it's all about personality too.
