SPD in first pregnancy - did you get it with subsequent pregnancy/ies?

Hi,

I had SPD when I was pregnant with my DD and it became so bad I couldn't walk properly from 20 weeks.

I'm now only 5 weeks with my second but am getting pain in my hips. If you got it again in your next pregnancy, did it start earlier? I'm really hoping this pain is unrelated and will go but I can't help but worry it's SPD starting already!

I got it on my last pregnancy at for sure 29 weeks but not sure how long before that as I didn't know what it was.

This time I have had 3 minor incidents where i thought it was starting up and rushed off to the physio. I'm now 37 weeks and I don't have enough hip pain to complain but plenty of other ailments.

There was a long gap between this and my last pregnancy and I really worked on getting fit and strengthening up the core and pelvic area.

There are exercises your physio can give you even now to try and ward it off so maybe best to speak to them and try and limit it or prevent it altogether

SPD with DC1 - started about 20wks, had to have physio for the last 10 weeks. With my second, had twinges and thought it was the start of it at about 16wks, had a physio assessment but they wouldn't help - but thankfully it never really progressed so my second pregnancy was a lot easier.

I couldn’t get anybody to take me seriously or do anything about mine during my first pregnancy, despite having days where I couldn’t wall etc.

It took close to a year for it to go away and got pregnant again almost straight after that. Argh!

11 weeks now and already feeling twinges, but saw a lovely, sympathetic midwife who has already referred me for physio and said the earlier the better second time around.

Don’t be scared to push! Wish I had the first time.

I had it with all my pregnancies. This time (number 4) it started almost as soon as I got the BFP. Thought I'd be in a mess before I hit 2nd tri but it eased off. It's seemed to come in surges and then ease up. Possibly due to hormones. Now 20 weeks and some days on crutches but mostly not. Nowhere near as mobile and in pain but manageable.
I'd say prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Even if it is starting now it doesn't necessarily mean it will be worse this time. Fingers crossed!

Had it in my first from 36 weeks ish and then beyond, ended up having physio afterwards for six months. DD was breach and they think that could have been a factor.

Fully expected it to be horrendous from day 1 of my second pregnancy, however I had no problems at all.

Yes!

First time around it took ages to get a physio appointment, get a support belt and get help - which worked once I'd got them but it had got pretty painful in the interim.

Second time around - raised it early, felt it coming early and the dr/midwife were really supportive and helpful (completely different area, not sure if that's part of the difference!). So physio and support belts right from the beginning almost - meant it never got too bad. Initially I didn't need too many physio sessions but had enough to make sure things kept ticking along Ok and to get the right exercises etc. As pregnancy progressed, increased frequency of physio sessions, got different support belts and help.

Really made a big difference to not suffering anywhere near as badly - managing it right, right from the outset. Have you still got any pelvic supports you can start to wear? Or talk to your dr/mw when you next see them and impress upon them how badly managed it was last time and how you want it to be different this time...

Sorry I meant to say too so many people fobbed me off saying it was just part of pregnancy. Like another poster up thread said push for the physio or self refer if no one is listening. Mine didn't magically disappear after the birth but I got there in the end and thank god this pregnancy has been much easier on the hip pelvic pain front so far.

Seems to be a mixed bag! It's good to know it can come and go.

The physio with my first wasn't very helpful at all. One group session and then when I phoned to say how bad it was I was just given an appointment to get crutches. I'll try again though to see if they can offer anything more this time round.
