PCO vs PCOS ??? Help!

Hi all.

I have a question. I just got my bfp a few days ago, which I'm over the moon about after an MC last summer. This will be my first child.

A couple of months ago I had a scan and they told me I had polycystic ovaries. They were vague about whether I had the actual syndrome . My periods were a bit sporadic at the beginning of the year but evened out in the last three months. Other than that I have no other symptoms. I'm pretty slim and have an active job and eat (pretty healthily)

I've freaked myself out reading that PCOS has a high miscarriage rate. I know it's just because I'm nervous anyway...but has anyone else have experience of this grey area? Or reassurance / success story? I have my doc appointment on Friday but just need someone to calm me down in the meantime!!

Thank you in advance !

:(

Hi OP.

I have PCO but not PCOS. I have a history of irregular periods (I’m currently pregnant with my first child), it took me around 8 months to conceive but in that time I only had 3 periods (including the withdrawal bleed after coming off birth control). After a 100 day cycle I had an array of blood tests (CD1, CD5 and CD21) as well as an internal scan which diagnosed the pokycystic ovaries. I was told both ovaries are polycystic however one was worse than the other. My blood work however was normal (although my CD21 showed no ovulation, however when I did conceive it was on CD33, and believe I ovulated on CD91 of the 100 day cycle) so I ovulate late, but no evidence of PCOS as all my bloods were in the expected range.

My GP suggested a healthy diet and said she would put in a referral to the fertility clinic if I hadn’t conceived within a few months after my internal scan. I did conceive the following month and am now 24 weeks pregnant with a little girl. So far the pregnancy has been uncomplicated - baby is growing as expected, no anomalies identified at the 20 anomaly scan, and I’ve had no bleeding. I’ve had cramps and pains but been reassured these are very normal.

The same lady who performed my internal and diagnosed polycystic ovaries was actually the one to do my 12 week scan as well and spoke about how she’d remembered me being in not so long before. There has been no mention of any increased risk by either her or my midwife. It’s on my notes as history of irregular periods and polycystic ovaries but literally no one has mentioned it.

I was really confused at first as well as there’s loads of information about PCOS but not as much about PCO! I know it’s hard not to but honestly try not to worry, you’ve done the hard bit and got your BFP and the stress from worrying is more likely than PCO to be a problem!

Sorry if I’ve rambled on a bit!

I have PCOS, I had no symptoms other than struggling to conceive so would never have known if I hadn't been referred to the fertility clinic.
I had a missed miscarriage first pregnancy but was advised it was probably down to a chromosome problem. I've never heard that PCOS has a higher rate of miscarriage.
I'm currently 34+5 and have had a perfect pregnancy this time.
It's easy to worry during pregnancy, and especially when you've had a miscarriage previously xx

Hi,

I have PCO, and struggled to get pregnant for 3.5 years! It was so heartbreaking! But I'm currently 33+1 weeks pregnant, so it is possible :)

I have the cysts and really irregular periods, other than that I don't have any other symptoms (i.e weight gain, hair growth etc etc) my last period was about last November (I think!!) and I found out I was pregnant in the march/April, with a due date of 23rd Oct. so I was pregnant without even knowing as I had no missed period!

I was also very scared when I found out I was pregnant as I had also read horror stories of miscarriages, but doctors assured me that it was going to be okay and that additional stress and worry isn't good (easy said than done!)

Congrats on your news! Wishing you all the best x

I had an experience a bit like yours. While having an internal scan for something unrelated, the sonographer told me my ovaries had many cysts and suggested they were polycystic. It was a surprise as I had regular periods, am slim etc. I went to the GP afterwards and later got bloods taken. But they can back fine. So wasn’t ever made clear to me if I had PCO or not. Anyway, I’m currently 24+4 weeks. No problem at all. And fell pregnant after a few months of trying. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I can't tell you how grateful I am for all your posts. You've all made me feel so much better.

It is super confusing!! The docs were very vague (covering themselves I guess). Dr google is the worst. I'm going to try to relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

Best wishes to everyone and good luck

Xx

Doctor google is scary but patient.co.uk is rational.
I have friend wth pcos and babies and sometimes it’s a little slower to fall preggers but once there it’s all good. X good luck!

@Igletpiglet I know. Everyone tells me not to google things but it's SO HARD. In future maybe I'll heard straight the patient.co.uk

I feel much better today :)

Thank you!!
