31 weeks and already put on 17kg...

I'm 31 weeks pregnant, and decided to weigh myself yesterday. My midwife has only weighed me once during my pregnancy and that was at my 8 week appointment. I was 74kg to start off with (I'm tall and my BMI was 23 so nothing to worry about, even though it sounds heavy!). I now weigh 91kg and have still got 6-11 weeks to go! Think is, I haven't got a huge bump, have put on a very small bit of weight around my legs and arms but really not much, my jeans are still the same size, and I just can't see where the 17kg has gone. My boobs have got pretty huge, but I am worried that I have put on too much weight and am just completely naive to it! Worried I'm going to look an absolute mess after baby is born...

Did anyone else put on a lot of weight but lose it quickly after? Or put on a lot but not really change much in body shape?

Anxiety central at the moment!

I put on 25kgs, from a starting weight of 59kgs... No GD and completely average sized baby at 41+5.

Now, 7 months post partum, I’ve got maybe 5-6kgs left to lose, and am back in my old clothes (that happened around 5 months pp) - despite no weight loss diet or any proper exercise (gym/classes etc).

The biggest issue has been the hit to my confidence tbh, but we’re all healthy and that’s what matters! I’ll definitely try to be more careful next time, I think I ate too much in my second trimester...

Cranberri · 04/09/2018 22:45

Fab that you only have a small amount to lose. Best of luck!

I'm really worried about my post baby body. 17kg. Can't believe it. How on earth can I slow down my weight gain? I only eat when I am hungry and have very little refined sugar! I do eat a great deal of fruit though...

Wish I never weighed myself now...

Honestly, don’t worry about it! Like you say, there’s not much you can do if you’re being healthy with your diet now and going forward :)

I also was shocked at how long it took my uterus to go down (6-7 weeks fully) and how much my stomach changed texture after the birth... it was like a big jelly balloon. When I prodded it, it rippled... I could have cried. But now I’m 90% back to normal on that front, and exercise would help I’m sure! So don’t worry, you’ll likely look a bit different but not necessarily “worse”!

The first few weeks I could literally watch the scales go down every 2 days, it was crazy, with no effort. Obviously I can’t speak for everyone, but I found it okay to get back to normal.

I'm only 13+3 and have already put on 3kg Blush

Cranberri · 04/09/2018 22:56

@CobaltRose I remember your old posts and I just want to say how happy I am that you are 13+3! Best of luck to you Smile

Aw, that's so sweet of you to remember! Thank you. Still quite anxious after my loss but as I'm getting further along I'm starting to relax a little bit more Smile

Cranberri · 04/09/2018 23:07

cobalt this is my first after 3 losses. It has been so rough but you will cherish absolutely every moment of this pregnancy. My advice?

  • Take LOADS of photos of your bump (even if they're just for you)
  • If you want that 4d scan, don't listen to people who tell you it's a gimmick, just do it!
  • check out ASOS sale for maternity clothes (awesome)
  • talk about your worries with your midwife. I left this too late and have only just started talking about my losses. I wish I would have sought it earlier!

Sorry if that advice was entirely unwanted but from one woman who has experienced a loss to another, just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Best of luck!

Oh god don't haha, I've taken loads of pictures of my bump! It's probably more bloat then anything but just imagining a little baby kicking away in there is fantastic ❤

Thank you so much for the advice and kind words, and congrats on your pregnancy! One loss was hard enough, I cannot imagine going through three and having the strength and determination to try again! You're so brave! Smile

Cranberri · 04/09/2018 23:11

cobalt bloat that wouldn't be there if it wasn't caused by baby Wink I wish I took more photos earlier on I really do!

Ah, you just do what you've got to do don't you. You're more than welcome! Thanks

Wow cobalt what a fantastic picture! Mine was absolutely terrible and looked like a blob with 3 arms Grin still, I stared at mine for hours. I just had a 4d scan and it was amazing. I think I just needed to see that little face as I was in denial a bit regarding being pregnant. I still don't quite believe it. Ahhh so happy to read this as your old post really upset me and I'm just so bloomin' chuffed to read this!

Haha, my 8 week scan looked like scrambled egg so I was shocked I got such a good picture this time round Grin

The best advice I can give after 4 pregnancies Is don’t weigh yourself unless there’s a medical reason you need to .ot walkways made me feel shit amd under pressure and I always lost it anyway . The body does what it has to do .

ichifanny · 05/09/2018 04:38

It always

NameChangedNow · 05/09/2018 04:42

I've put on loads and loads, mainly because in first and half of second trimesters I could only eat junk otherwise I would throw it up. I'm still pg. I really wouldn't worry about it. Once you've given birth you can exercise easily and will find eating healthy easier. For now you are growing a human. That is a major job. Don't worry about your weight for now.

lambdroid · 05/09/2018 07:48

I was 50kg at 8 weeks and put on about 15kg. Everybody commented that I was ‘all bump’, but I know I put on a lot on my thighs, and felt like my boobs were ridiculous. I’m 5 ft 3 and fairly small framed, so have no idea how I put on so much without it really showing. I do look a lot rounder in the face when I look back at pictures, but not huge amounts.

I lost it all after 4 months with little effort while breastfeeding, and lost a further 3kg after starting at the gym after 7 months.

Biggest issue for me has been the saggy stomach thing as I had a big baby for my size (8lb 3) and bad stretch marks. Now 11 weeks with my second so at least won’t have to worry about that for a bit!

MaverickSnoopy · 05/09/2018 07:55

You know what, we're all different. No one is going to gain the same as the next person. Personally I usually gain about 2 stone in pregnancy and loose it immediately, gaining loads when breastfeeding. This time I've put 7kg on (so far) and have 5 weeks ish to go. I'm going to try and be super mindful not to gain so much weight breastfeeding this time.

You might find a lot of your gain is water weight/fluids and if you look fairly similar then I really wouldn't worry. The most important thing is that you're doing your best to eat the right things and you're growing a baby.

reetgood · 05/09/2018 08:17

I didn’t weigh myself that much, but I was pretty big when baby was born. I really didn’t worry too much about what I ate, either, although didn’t overeat.

I was back at pre birth weight in four weeks (bmi of 24/size 12ish) - totally accidental. Breastfeeding + emergency c section + losing my appetite first week + needing to get out and walk every day for my sanity after 10 days.

I think I now have more hips than I did pre pregnancy- I was quite up and down before. Also, it sounds weird but I swear post c section my tummy is flatter! It’s softer, yes, but it has a different shape. I always had a sticky out tummy, but it’s like when they put me back something adjusted.

My experience is that it’s a really massive thing for your body to go through. I would be gentle with myself and not worry about weight in your situation. Wellbeing, yes, but that’s different from worrying about the numbers on a scale. When you feel ready to become more active post birth, go easy on things that put pressure on pelvic floor like planks as they can make diastasis recti worse.

I have been living it up with the breastfeeding hunger. Now he’s taking less I’m going to have to adjust, which is going to be the big challenge :)

Cranberri · 05/09/2018 08:34

This is all reassuring. Thank you! I'm still really worried about putting on more in the last few weeks. Really wish I just didn't weigh myself!

ichifanny · 05/09/2018 09:06

It’s natural to gain weight in pregnancy it’s for breastfeeding fat stores your body is doing what it needs to do so just trust it and enjoy just letting it happen .

Goostacean · 05/09/2018 20:24

Oh gosh, I’ve just remembered the night sweats! The night sweats!!! I reckon I lost like a kilo of water weight a night for the first 3-4 nights, the bed was SOAKED. So that helped 😂

OutPinked · 05/09/2018 20:34

Also 31 weeks and weighed myself today, have gained exactly the same as you. I have big babies and always lose a stone immediately after giving birth so I’m not too worried about it.
