HEARTBURN!!

22 replies

newmummyjan19 · 04/09/2018 15:47

I know for sure I'm not the only pregnant lady that's suffering through this heartburn hassle that good old pregnancy brings... I've made a list of foods that are causing it but if I continue to do this I soon will have nothing left to eat!

Does anyone have any hints or tips of what I can do to help..

So far I've tried

-drinking milk

-Double action gaviscon

-Rennies

Only the orange Rennies ever worked for me!

@Aprilshowersnowastorm

I've tried the orange ones and the peppermint ones and it's just really not helping me any 🙃🙃

Eating little and often helps me, as does not eating right before bed and trying to stay reasonably upright after my evening meal instead of sprawling back on the recliner sofa!!! I also find if I drink a lot with my evening meal it makes it worse so I try not to drink for an hour either side of eating.

I was miserable with heartburn and nothing helped. My midwives were spectacularly unhelpful until I saw somebody new at 36 weeks who recommended I call my GP.

I was prescribed omeprazole which is safe during pregnancy and was instant relief. Don’t suffer!

Thegirlhasnoname · 04/09/2018 16:22

My midwife recommended something called Remegel (which are chewy and “mint flavoured”) because nothing else was working on me. So far, touch wood, they are working!

newmummyjan19 · 04/09/2018 16:25

@Darkstar4855

I'm getting the heart burn even during the night when I'm sleeping... I've made my dinner time earlier because I thought that would help but it certainly hasn't... I've started sleeping a little more upright..

I do most certainly think a visit to the doctor is my next best chance of stopping the suffering....

I'm 20 weeks and did suffer from heartburn when I ate chocolate before pregnancy but now I get heartburn from basically just breathing 😅

Asda's own brand heartburn relief medicine , it's pinky / orange in a normal medicine bottle. It says store in cook dry place but put it in the fridge and it will go really thick , 'gloopy' and freezing cold . Have some of that , it literally clings on and cools as it goes down and I drank gallons of the stuff whilst pregnant last year! It says on it about pregnancy but I asked my midwife & pharmacist and they cleared it fine to take and said it was harmless.

I hope it settles for you , it drove me CRAZY whilst pregnant Sad

Another who got omeprazole - dr had to prescribe but after that the midwife arranged more through the dr so didn’t need extra appointments. Took it in the morning and nothing all day long. Was amazing after weeks of suffering (and a whole pregnancy last time). Dr said no risks - you’ve tried over the counter and it hasn’t worked.

TorchesTorches · 04/09/2018 16:32

Nothing worked for me except bicarb of soda disolved in water (1 tea spoon in a cup) It tastes a bit odd and makes you burp lots, but it was effective for me when the rennies and gaviscon didn't.

LucyLou19 · 04/09/2018 16:48

Gaviscon liquid is the only thing what helps me xx

NameChangeCuddleBums · 04/09/2018 16:51

Just normal chewing gum really worked for
me only while I was chewing it. Eventually I got a prescription from the GP.

Ginger1982 · 04/09/2018 17:14

Tums were my lifesavers!!

DaisyChops · 04/09/2018 17:53

OP you have my sympathy, I had the most awful heartburn and acid reflux, it's vile!

3 pregnancies later this is what worked for me:

Rapidol express (by Zantac) - I spent a fortune on these and the chemist kept trying to refuse to sell me them so often but the pharmacist said they were ok. I actually had other people buying them for me aswell!

Ranitidine - hospital advised these but I had to fight to get gp to prescribe them, the other tablets, omeprozole did nothing for me at all!!

Gavison medicine - think I had the cheap version on prescription but it was ok

Milk and ham sandwich at night when it started, seemed to soak up the acid.

Hope you find something that works for you soon 🤞

newmummyjan19 · 04/09/2018 19:50

@DaisyChops

Thank you so much I will definitely be trying some of these out!

I tried to drink milk before bed but I found that I was getting up more for the toilet in the night...

Feel like I can't win with heartburn😕

Also I absolutely salute you for having 3 children, I think this will definitely be my first and my last 😅

Ranitidine has been a life saver for me in the last couple of weeks. My sister is a midwife and says it’s fine to take (you may want to check with your midwife first), you can buy off the shelf in boots /Asda etc. Buy their own brand ones, the branded version can be more expensive: www.boots.com/boots-pharmaceuticals-heartburn-relief-tablets-75mg-10021827

I get the 75mg tablets and take one a day, two if you need. Game changer! I was still v gassy/burpy but without the hideous acid reflux each time.

BumbleNova · 04/09/2018 19:57

Another one who went to the GP. It's been a life saver. made such a difference!

Meganc559 · 04/09/2018 21:06

I had the double action tablets and they didn't work but I got the advanced gaviscon peppermint medicine and it works as soon as I take it!

DaisyChops · 04/09/2018 21:18

How many weeks are you OP?

I knew I was pregnant with my 2nd as before I'd even done a test I had heartburn, the joys!!

You'll have all the old dears saying to you that the baby will have a full head of hair!!!

newmummyjan19 · 05/09/2018 10:11

@DaisyChops

I am officially 20 weeks today, I had heartburn before but not on this level x

OP posts:
villainousbroodmare · 05/09/2018 10:13

Nothing but omeprazole worked for me.

DaisyChops · 05/09/2018 10:30

Ah bless you, mine started about 16 weeks, hope you find something that works soon. I had morning sickness aswell but omg that was a stroll in the park compared to the heartburn! x

newmummyjan19 · 05/09/2018 17:43

@DaisyChops

My morning sickness has only just started to semi settle but but certain foods & smells or not eating as soon as I wake up doesn't help it... I think I've spent my whole pregnancy trying to control my sickness and now I have heartburn to content with... they say babies keep you on your toes but I think it's the actual pregnancy 😂
