Blocked ears/Deafness

Hi All,

I'm currently 24 weeks + 1 and for a while I've had the feeling that my ears were blocked however it seemed to improve over the day and shift from ear to ear.
Over the past couple of days I've noticed it getting worse and I have pretty much lost all hearing in my left ear and nothing seems to improve it - it's as if I am constantly under water. Does anyone know if this is normal or has experienced it themselves? I've got an appointment with the midwife on Thursday so will bring it up then.

Thanks!

Sinus and ear issues are connected to pregnancy. My right ear was constantly blocked every morning but would kind of shift during the day (it's fine now since I've had baby). However if you're going completely deaf that sounds a bit worrying so I'd definitely check it out

I have autumn hayfever which always gives me ear and sinus problems. Usually it's my left ear that goes deaf/blocked, I think because I mostly sleep on my left side so my sinus problem drains into the thingy (eustachian?) tube towards my left ear. If that's the case with you then perhaps an anti histamine might help.

I've had some issues with hearing but it's a sort of weird thing where certain pitches seem to be louder than others and cause some pain. Apparently it's normal because the extra blood can cause some swelling in your ears but I'd mention it to be on the safe side x

I would go to the doctors today and tell them that you have went deaf over the past few days. Not to alarm you but this can be a sign of hearing loss and it's imperative that you are seen by the hospital. They can give you steroid treatment for this but it is time sensitive and you need to have it administered within 72 hours. Please go and make sure you are seen today.
Again, don't panic, but best be on the safe side.

I am 17 week’s and have had excess wax since about 5-6 week’s which I understand is a symptom of pregnancy. I saw gp who recommended 5 days of olive oil drops, followed by syringing, but in first trimester I just felt nauseous with it. The wax in my ears made me feel a bit sick. The wet feeling of putting oil in made me feel sick... so I left it until last Friday when one ear just blocked up.

But it was a bit on and off, like if a moved my head it would open up for a second and then “close” again.

So I booked in to my local Specsavers for Microsuction. It costs £35 per ear but it was so worth it. They do like you to have used olive oil for 5 days but I used it for 2 days and they said I could go anyway and if they can’t do it they won’t charge but the wax was soft enough.

I wouldn’t leave it as it could start chasing pain and cause infection.

And try not to get water in your ears.
