Induction frustration!

Hi all,

I am 35+2 and under consultant due to Gestational diabetes. I am taking 1 metformin once a day and levels are fine, baby is measuring about a week ahead. Generally feeling fed up with pregnancy as have carpal tunnel in both arms and insomnia.

I have been told today that I will be induced at 40+3. I really don’t want to be induced, I’ve heard so many horror stories (people ending up needing emergency sections, failed attempts etc). I also didn’t think they would let me go to 40+ weeks due to placenta issues that can develop and risk due to size and stillbirth. There are no plans for further growth scans.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Consultant has said no to planned section in no uncertain terms. Has anyone had a positive induction experience they could share?

I was induced and don't have the best story to share but my lovely boy was safe and well. I did want to just say that they can't point blank refuse a section if you really feel it's the better option.

I'm expecting my second and have been referred to a consultant for discussion about having a section. My midwife was really supportive and didn't hesitate to book me in with the consultant.

Just wanted to advise you to read up a little and know your rights as not fair for you to be worried etc x

I had a positive induction after my waters broke at 36 weeks. It took about 24 hrs to really get going on the pessary, but once I got into active labour everything happened very fast and he was born within a couple of hours. I had pethidine and gas and air. Had I needed to go on a drip I would have asked for an epidural in place first.

An NCT friend was induced at 39 weeks due to reduced foetal growth and also had a quick and positive experience.

You are entitled to refuse an induction though, and if you feel you would prefer a c section you absolutely should advocate for that.

I was induced due to.GD, big baby at 36 week scan so induced at 37.5

Had a great exper ience. Took 24 hrs for the pessary to take effect, water s were broken by MW then less than 5 hrs later DD was born.

Just gas n air, no IV so able to.labour stood up and pacing around.

DD was 8lb 11oz so expected by to be over 10 lbs if i went to 40 weeks or more.

Nice to hear that some inductions have been straightforward at least! I certainly don’t want to be a drama queen, my thoughts around a section is that it’s more controlled and calm. My family/friends have generally gone overdue and have some sort of intervention like forceps so that’s affecting me. And then reading into inductions the thought of a failed one or 2 days of labour to end up having a c section is causing a lot of anxiety.

I think I’m disappointed that they’re going to let me go that far too, with the possible complications. Hopefully I’ll feel more optimistic in a few days.

Hopefully this makes you feel better - I'm one of the ones who had an emcs after a day plus of induction. It was actually a very positive experience. I had one to one midwife care, I was really well looked after, generally really good care. Induction followed by emcs sounds bad on paper, but I truly think my experience was better than many "uncomplicated" birth stories I've heard. My most negative memory of the whole thing was the sheer boredom waiting for everything to kick off!

I was induced with my daughter. drip started around 6am and she was delivered at 14.44... no scary horror stories here either :) x x
