Anyone had a failed induction before?

Hey I'm writing this thread mainly because I thought my baby boy would be here today but after starting the induction process on 31st Aug (Friday morning) it failed and hasn't worked! I was contracting but not dilating so they were unable to break my waters, I feel frustrated but completely understand why they are giving me a break and I agree it's best for my baby and my body. I just feel like no one prepped me for the idea that it might not work. The reason for being inducted was my severe SPD and I had 3 consultants recommend it to me. I'm 40+5 today. I've been left till Saturday to see if labour will come on naturally and if not will have to give it another go then. Just wondered had anyone experienced this? I feel frustrated but also feel like my body won't be able to do it naturally if it didn't work in induction process. Anyway I know I'm very lucky to have a happy and healthy baby just him and my body combined are obviously not quite ready yet!

Are you allowed home? I would just get on the ball, plenty of walking and just enjoy the last few days xx

blueelephant91 · 03/09/2018 16:49

Yes sorry. I am home.
I am using the birthing ball, walking isn't easy as I'm on crutches and I really can't do a lot. Yes I do a little bit but it's quite difficult hence why I was being induced as I am in pain pretty much 24/7. But thank you for advice! Hopefully being at home and being more relaxed rather than in hospital will help! Xx

Yes, twice. I didn't realise it could fail either.

Daisy2990 · 03/09/2018 16:55

Sorry to hear you are having this experience. Sadly, I think it's pretty common. In my case the midwife broke my waters anyway (I had stopped contracting by the time they did it). It was very painful because they couldn't get the instrument through the cervix -- I think they have done the right thing not forcing it on you.
In the end, I didn't dilate at all despite being on the drip for two days.
A lot of ladies who were in at the same time were on their second/ third attempt. It is frustrating but there's a good chance it'll happen eventually!

LaPufalina · 03/09/2018 16:55

I had four attempts at 40+1 due to reduced movement and slowing growth (prostin) and they didn't get past 1cm dilated with any of them, not enough to break my waters, so I had a section at 40+4.

thereareflowersinmygarden · 03/09/2018 16:57

Me. Also for SPD.

I went for a section in the end- so much easier. I think inductions are barbarous actually.

bellinisurge · 03/09/2018 17:00

Mine failed. Or at least I was told "this is rocket fuel and baby will be out in a couple of hours " as well as "we don't have enough staff in to do a c-section ".

18 hours later baby was born. She was fine- I was a mess and it took surgery a year later (after telling me all was fine and normal) to fix it.

mintoreo · 03/09/2018 17:09

I had a failed induction a few weeks ago. I had process first of all and then 2 x pessary along with several failed sweeps. I didnt really experience any contractions and didn’t dilate at all. They were unable to break my waters. After 3 days I ended up having a c-section.

mrs2468 · 03/09/2018 17:11

I had 4 pessaries and a rest of 24 hours after the third. Wasn't allowed home so was in hospital for five days before they could break my waters. I was always told each time the chances of it not working. Rest up and won't be long now. Good luck

BettyDuMonde · 03/09/2018 17:14

Yep. Resulted in a 1am c section.

Have they scanned you? My son was undiagnosed breech...

We were both fine btw (if a bit shocked, I’d not ever considered a c section as a possibility).

He’s 18 now and starts uni in a few weeks 😘

KingLooieCatz · 03/09/2018 17:17

I had a couple of pessaries then induced by drip (oxytocin maybe?). There was no getting away from it then. Hope baby comes soon and all is well.

welshcath · 03/09/2018 17:24

Mine failed too and like many others, it never entered my head that I wouldn't go in to labour the day I went in. 4 days later I ended up having a c section as ds had moved and was transverse.
Interestingly, there were 4 of us being induced that day and it didn't work for any of us.

Neweternal · 03/09/2018 17:55

Yes whole week own room, induced every 12 hours nothing! Not a twinge. Then I had a drip, again nothing! So c section child was very overdue and I think he was starved of oxygen to the brain although very bright and gifted, he's ADHD and I discovered later on having an overdue child increases you chances. He skin was a mess when he came out due to being so overdue. I really wish they just gave a c section. A month later the same hospital a much wanted IVF baby and the Mother was left like me continually being induced, sadly the baby died, the baby was a healthily 10lbs baby like mine. I often think it was just the grace of god. Where is the logic that says it's ok to induce 14 times?!! They couldn't even break my waters after a week, they tried I wasn't even dilated.

BackinTimeforTea · 03/09/2018 18:06

I had contracting with no dilation with dc1 - resting your body is the right thing to do in that case so you’re in good hands. The high dose drip they did next did work eventually, I wouldn’t refuse a c section if I’d been offered it though.

mrs2468 · 03/09/2018 18:28

My nhs trust only leave you with three pesseries then a 24 hour rest then three again as a maximum. You really should have been told everything so ask them to explain when you go back in. Only got the drip once they could break my waters then ended up with a c section anyway.

blueelephant91 · 03/09/2018 22:03

Thank you everyone for your replies! Wish I'd been told about it. The consultant was pretty concerned that I hadn't been told and went through everything with me again. It's frustrating but at least I know now. Just didn't realise how common it actually was. X
