Induction after previous section?

Has anyone had this?
I had an ‘ELCS’ with my little boy. I got pre eclampsia and they gave me steroids over the weekend and did the section on the Monday I was 38 weeks.

I was going to go for an ELCS this time however I’m completely worried because I am single and wondering how I’ll cope recovering from a section with my little boy too.
I was wondering if I could request induction?

Post this on the childbirth part of the forum as well. There are more posts about ELCS on there.

I did - but it didn't end well.

I ended up with an EMCS due to uterine rupture, rare but it is a risk. Luckily they repaired me well and I'm having my third by ELCS around 3-4 weeks early this time.

There are positive stories out there for sure and it can (and is) done at low dose carefully monitored.

Ah ! Sorry it didn’t go well for you. Do you wish you just went for an ELCS the second time ?

I was told I couldn’t be induced because of a previous emcs. Odd thing to say, because that baby had come spontaneously at 36+5.

Anyway, I wasn’t induced. Second baby came spontaneously at 39+0, but I still had a uterine rupture, lost a lot of blood and had a crash emcs under GA.

I had an EMCS with my first and ELCS with my second 17 months later. I was incredibly worried about recovery but was shocked to find that I could walk around hours later with relatively little discomfort and was discharged about 30 hours after having the baby at 5am. It was insanely easy compared to my first and within a week I felt almost normal.

I requested that I be allowed to carry on until 41 weeks in the hopes that the baby would come. My trust don't induce after previous sections, particularly as close together as my pregnancies were. As it happened, I went into labour at 40+6 when they discovered that my baby was presenting awkwardly and a natural birth was impossible. So I ended up having a half emergency section about an hour before my scheduled one as the theatre was waiting for me anyway!

Hi i had an ELCS in 2014 due to vaginal prolapse surgery a year prior and baby was also breech, this was after two natural births. Im 33+5 at the mo with baby #4 and i go back to the consultant at 36 weeks to decide whether I'm going to VBAC or ELCS this time. I was initially set on a VBAC but the consultant is concerned at the risks of rupture as i would need to be induced too as i suffer with precipitate labours and pph so my birth needs to be controlled. I feel even though i have the option I'm now leaning more towards another ELCS from 37 weeks to reduce all risks. Also they can't be sure how quick it would take to induce so i feel its the better option for me to go for an elcs. I was advised though if i choose an induced vbac they won't use any hormone, it would be a foley bulb & breaking of waters.

I’m in Germany and in my local hospital they will not induce after a CS as it increases the risk of uterine rupture. Even if they would agree to it in the UK I would not risk it personally.

SpottingTheZebras · 02/09/2018 18:57

Are you sure your hospital will induce after a CS?

How old is your DC? Recovery from an ELCS can be quite straightforward and ok. In fact, it can be easier than some vaginal deliveries.

My little boy is 4 the week I’m due ! Ahh.
I havnt discussed induction with them I didn’t even know if it’s possible - apparently we don’t talk birth plan till 36 weeks ?!
Is this the same everywhere ?
Seems very late to me ! Has anyone had a section booked before that ?

I did recover very well from my first section. I can’t remember time frames but I remember pottering around and taking it easy. Just wondering how easy that would be with my little boy! Luckily he is such a credit he’s so helpful and lovely, so if I could find someone to take him to nursery in the mornings I’d be sorted, it’s just worrying incase I don’t recover well! But again I wouldn’t want to end up with an EMCS

My section was booked at 28 weeks for 41 weeks. Looking after a 4 year old probably isn't as difficult as looking after a much younger child (mine was 17 months) given that they have some independence and autonomy to grab drinks/snacks/entertain themselves for a bit. I would definitely book in for a section but maybe try for a VBAC.

SpottingTheZebras · 02/09/2018 19:50

Remember as well, that you could opt for a VBAC and still end up with an EMCS. Maybe it is best to plan for an ELCS now so you do have someone who can take your DS to nursery.

I’ve had three sections and, for me, getting the older children in the car was what delayed my return to driving most of all because I couldn’t lift them and I couldn’t go anywhere without them. I would have thought at four, your DS can get himself into and out of his car seat so you should be back on the road as soon as you feel/are physically well enough to drive. At worst, your DS will miss a few weeks of nursery but that might work out ok anyway as you might all enjoy that time together so he feels included.

My consultant has said they advice against induction after a section, I think the odds of uterine rupture go from something like 1 in 1000 to 1 in 100.
