How common is it to haemorrhage after giving birth or after a c section? I’m terrified of this complication and just wondering what the likelihood is.
I’m a FTM and due next month. I keep thinking I’ll die. I can’t stop thinking this. Especially since a friend had to have several blood transfusions after her EMCS.

1 to 5% according to online stats. It happened to me after DC2 and after a MMC last year so I’m having an ELCS this time to be in a controlled environment should it happen again. It is scary but even 5% isn’t very common, I wouldn’t worry too much and honestly the doctors and midwives are absolutely brilliant at sorting it ASAP.

It’s not that common and maternity units do regular emergency procedure drills so that they know exactly what to do in that situation. They have haemorrhage-stopping drugs, blood transfusions and specialist doctors immediately available if needed. Maternal deaths from haemorrhage are vanishingly rare in the UK these days because it is so treatable, and when they do happen it’s usually associated with pre-existing blood clotting disorders or people not wanting transfusion.

I think it would be a good idea to chat with your midwife about your fears as they may have a specialist midwife they can refer you to for help and advice that will hopefully get you feeling a bit better and a bit more relaxed about things Flowers
