Muscle twitches or baby moving?

Asking because I'm a first-timer and I have no idea. I keep being told early movements are like flutters, but it feels more like gentle muscle twitches just above my pubic area to the left of my belly button. I feel like it's just wishful thinking as I was told I have an anterior placenta at my 12 week scan, so I'd put out of my mind that I'd feel anything until much later on - I'm 18+6 and have been getting these twitches for just under a week. Happens if I'm sat down for a while. The fact that I have been getting muscle twitches in my legs as well does make me doubtful. Also it's definitely not gas!

Anyone else?!

That’s exactly what mine felt like at 19 weeks also with a anterior placenta so I’d say it’s probably baby!!

SophieStripe · 31/08/2018 19:08

I think muscle twitches is a good way to describe it! I'm 21+2 also with anterior placenta. They still feel a bit like muscle twitches most of the time but on some days they are definite kicks that can be felt by others on the outside!

Merrydoula · 31/08/2018 19:12

As a first timer I was also confused by this, I'm now certain that definitely was baby moving. Very sweet isn't it

beccii161016 · 31/08/2018 19:19

Definitely sounds like baby! I've always said mine felt like little muscle spasms!

hiccupgate · 31/08/2018 19:24

I just really want it to be but don't want to be kidding myself! The midwife did mention to me that sometimes the placenta can move "up" your belly as your bump grows? Since the spasms are quite low down I guess this would make sense. Smile

Definitely possible! Mine feel like painless muscle twitches right now (22+3), fairly low down between the belly button and pubic line. Try eating/drinking something sweet (Coke, orange juice, popsicle) then lie flat and hold both hands above that area for a while. Felt the first kick like this in week 18! More like a faint poke but you will immediately know that it's not coming from a part of "your" body!

jennac · 01/09/2018 10:20

I would say muscle twitches by your pubic line are definitely movements. I'm getting them loads at the moment - I'm 22+4 with my first and am only just allowing myself to believe that's really what it is! It's funny though - I'm exactly the same as you in that I also get them in my thighs which is weird!!

hiccupgate · 01/09/2018 19:07

I think judging by the replies I might just assume that it's movement. It at least makes me less anxious heading into the next scan! :)

Muscle twitches is exactly how I described the first movements. I never had anything like butterflies or bubbles popping as others often say. Definitely baby I'd say.

Rarfy · 01/09/2018 19:22

Im 18+4 and have been having exactly the same since about 16 wks. This is my 4th pregnancy but only 2nd which has got this far. In my other one it definitely felt like bubbles popping but i have anterior placenta and this time it is definitely like a muscle twitch. Its lovely. Enjoy.

wonderstar1216 · 01/09/2018 19:22

And yes it can move up, on my second it was quite low but moved as I grew!

captainshortie · 01/09/2018 19:31

Im like you, convincing myself if is! I keep feeling "something" but as soon as it happens and i concentrate on it, it stops(if that makes sense) how do you know what kind of placenta youve got? Will it be in my notes??

wonderstar1216 · 01/09/2018 20:04

It would be if it wasn't in the right place @captainshortie and they've probably have mentioned it to you.

SophieStripe · 01/09/2018 20:26

Anterior isn't in the wrong position. Nothing dangerous about it. No one mentioned mine to me, it's in my notes from 12 week scan. If it were worryingly low then they might mention it but they are often low at 12 week scan. At 20 week scan it would be mentioned if it were still low - but low enough to cause problems. I know this because I asked my midwife this exact question as on my notes it's noted as anterior, low.

hiccupgate · 02/09/2018 12:08

I only know where it is because I asked at the 12 week scan, otherwise I don't think they'd have told me and it's not on my notes that I can see. Will ask again at 20 weeks and see if it's high or low.

@hiccupgate hi, did you find out if they were kicks? I keep thinking maybe I need some extra vitamins

Same. I always found the first movements felt more like muscle twitches than fluttering or anything like that.

Spottypineapple · 14/06/2023 16:06

I had anterior placenta with my first and felt movement from around 18 weeks, so it could well be :)

hiccupgate · 16/06/2023 19:22

@Mimi2022 yes they were!! The fact my 20 week baby was kicking through an anterior placenta should have given me some indication of the child I'd end up with!!! 😅
