Large subchorionic haemorrhage or not?!

Hi everyone,
I’m pregnant with DC2 having had a textbook perfect pregnancy with DC1 however I’m not having the same luck this time round.
I had a small bleed at 6 weeks, went for a private scan and heartbeat was fine. Last Thursday (approx 10 weeks) I suffered a massive bright red bleed, thought the worst but EPU couldn’t see me until 8 days later. I went for a private scan on Monday where amazingly baby was fine, measuring 11 weeks but they confirmed I had a subchorionic haemorrhage about 2.8cm by 2.8cm. I think we were both in such shock at there being a baby I didn’t take it in. Went to EPU today praying haemorrhage had shrunk but it looks like it’s got much larger and from the photo I have seems to surround the whole sack. The sonographer was lovely but very brief and clearly in a rush and just said it was very very large but then wondered whether it wasn’t a haemorrhage but was instead some fluid (although clearly this must be abnormal). I’ve got to wait a week until 12 week scan and then go back to EPU a week later but clearly now panicking that it’s increased that much in a few days.
I wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation, or what will happen if it continues to grow? Kicking myself for not asking more questions, wasn’t even told whether I should rest and with a very active 2 year old that’s not happening at the moment. Any tips or advice or people sharing their experiences will massively help xxx

me. at 14 weeks huge bleed, huge haematoma. 9cm by 11cm, bigger than baby. Took ages to go. I bled until 19 weeks mainly brown but often red. I am now 28 weeks and haematoma gone and placenta function seems good although baby very small so having biweekly growth scans. I asked for advice at the time on here and there are a lot more positive stories than negative.
I had a 3yo and 9mo to contend with too and was told to rest not lift (haha!) but as much as i could i made sure i was horizontal and doing less than normal. Take it as easy as you can. 🤞 for you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to me and so good to hear a positive story. It’s so scary especially after such an easy pregnancy last time! Can I ask, did you have regular scans until they confirmed it had gone? They didn’t tell me the size today but looking at the snap photo it’s definitely bigger than the baby at this point.

you should have notes from scan which will say size. yes i had a scan at 16 weeks and they expected it to have gone but it was bigger, then one at 19 weeks then my usual 20 week scan. I then was going to be left alone until 28 weeks but baby wasnt seeming to grow or move much so got scanned at 25 weeks at wjich point they said haematoma had gone 👍
it is so scary! especially when you are bleeding so much.

Oh I didn’t get any notes today but don’t know if that’s just the process with the early pregnancy unit, really wish I did though as I want to know the size although it’s probably best I don’t! That’s so good that it went by 25 weeks - must feel like such a relief!

I had a haematoma at the beginning of this pregnancy, started with very heavy red bleeding, no pain but bled for 5 weeks from around week 9. I'm 27 weeks now.

I also had one in my previous pregnancy with exactly the same symptoms although this one started around week 11 and again I bled for 5/6 weeks.

It's horrible but eventually went to brown blood and they both resolved.

EmW1987 · 01/09/2018 08:37

Oh that must have been scary bleeding for 5 weeks.
I actually only bled for a day and touchwood nothing since but I don’t actually know if that’s a good or a bad thing as clearly it’s getting bigger and the blood has to go somewhere?!
I’m so confused because at the end of my scan she said maybe it’s not a haemorrhage and maybe it’s fluid but in a way that indicates it’s abnormal either way. Just kicking myself for not asking more questions as now feel like I don’t understand what’s going on!

Yes i no what you mean, can you call the clinic and ask for a re scan. I would explain you've been left feeling confused which isn't fair really or at least for someone to call you and explain.

EmW1987 · 01/09/2018 13:24

Thanks although having looked the clinic isn’t open at weekends and only open from 10-4 week days. I had to wait 8 days for the initial appointment so very doubtful I’ll even be able to speak to someone until my next scan there in a fortnight. Guess I’ve got to sit it out until the 12 week scan and pray it’s somehow miraculously shrunk 🤞🏻

I had a similar experience in my second pregnancy. Huge bleed at 10 weeks, scanned and told it was a subchronic haematoma likely to be blood coming from the place that the placenta was attached. Baby alive and well. Scanned again at 12 weeks and blood inside had increased. Told that the blood could 'come away' all at one and that baby could come with it, or that the blood could be re-absorbed into the body and everything be fine. Scanned again at 16 weeks and blood had reduced and disappeared by 20 weeks. I rested as much as poss but still worked (desk job).
Baby was born alive and well at 42 weeks (not induced) but was very small for dates (5lb 12oz, other two babies were 8/9lb'ers). She's now a lively although still dainty 8yr old Smile
I really hope all is well with you and your little one. I remember it as the most awful, incredibly anxious timeThanks

EmW1987 · 01/09/2018 17:28

Oh thank you so much for taking the time to respond and so pleased it all worked out well. It’s so scary and I don’t feel like anyone has actually spoken to me about what it means which makes it more confusing as just trying to read as much as I can. Praying when I have my next scan that it has reduced but there’s no way of knowing is there!

Fingers crossed for you. I paid for the 16 week scan privately because I was so worried about it (we'd wanted a gender scan anyway). They wouldn't tell me anything about the hematoma at the private scan but I could see that it had reduced and baby had grown bigger, which was a huge relief. I too felt left without much info about it, and Dr Google can be frightening sometimes!!
They didn't offer me any extra scans, and didn't pick up that she was tiny. It was a surprise when she was born! Everything crossed for you Thanks

EmW1987 · 01/09/2018 23:04

Thanks - that’s interesting that they didn’t offer any additional scans, seems like they don’t talk much about it or seem overly concerned yet from what I’m reading it is quite serious! I think I’ll definitely pay to go private around that time, think the uncertainty has made me want to find the gender out as feel like it’s one bit of information I can cling on to. The wait until the next scan feels like eternity although it’s only a few days away!
