Nursery furniture

Where did you buy your nursery furniture from? I need a wardrobe, drawers & cot but everywhere I've looked for nice pieces it's almost £1000 for the lot!

Cot I am buying mokee. Wardrobe and drawers Hemnes series from ikea. You don't need to spend £1000 on 'special' nursery stuff. Furniture is furniture and buying 'normal' stuff will mean it will last you much longer/can be moved to other rooms in the future. Don't waste your money on special dressers with changing things built in to them!

SophieStripe · 31/08/2018 18:14

Wayfair also has some nice reasonably priced stuff

PotteringAlong · 31/08/2018 18:16

Cot from ikea (£35 one, did all 3 children!) and everything else was stuff we’d already got. I couldn’t see the point of buying special nusery furniture which seemed too small and grossly overpriced.

NapQueen · 31/08/2018 18:18

We bought a chest of drawers from Ikea and skipped the wardrobe altogether. Changing mat on top of the drawers was the plan but endrd up changing on the floor in the living room. We got a handme down cotbed (new mattress) which has lasted til 5yo with the sides off. It was Mamas and Papas v good quality.

We got ours wardrobes once they had school uniform needing hanging.

Definitely buy normal furniture and a cot. We were given a cot with a changer on top which was a god send after my EMCS. As soon as I was mobile I changed DD in the floor as it is much safer.

Some people use IKea hemmes drawers and put a changing mat on top.

DragonScales · 31/08/2018 18:21

We got this 8 years ago, it has lasted incredibly well! The cotbed a nd nappy changer are now with a friend after we used them for dc1 and dc2 . We still have the wardrobe and will keep it for years and years.

Agree with everyone else, just normal furniture and a cot is fine. 'Nursery' furniture is grossly overpriced.

skankingpiglet · 31/08/2018 19:33

I agree with PPs about nursery furniture being overpriced, but if you really want to go down that road then how about buying second hand? I've had more than a couple of friends and aquaintances that bought expensive and new, then a couple of years later were complaining how (comparatively) little they sold them on for despite being in excellent condition. It is worth buying with an eye to what you'll need in 12/24/36 month's time though.

Personally we got a decent cotbed with changer top in the John Lewis sale (£70, has done both children and will hopefully be able to sell for a small amount when DD2 outgrows in 6-12m). I shelled out for a decent mattress (£125), which is money well spent I think.
Got a moses basket (£35?) but wished I'd bought second hand with a new mattress. They are cheap as chips on selling sites (£5!) and usually in VGC.
Comfy chair for nursing - godsend! (£50)
We didn't need a wardrobe initially as DD1 started in the box room which had a built in cupboard, but once she moved rooms we bought a wall's worth of the Ikea Stuva wardrobes and drawers that have been great. The low wardrobe means (now 4yo) DD1 can sort herself out, and she has been doing that for about 18m. It should be suitable until she's 10-ish I reckon, then we can switch it around so the wardrobe section is higher. The Stuva was about £250 IIRC.

Definitely no need to spend anywhere near £1k!

BigBlueBubble · 31/08/2018 19:36

We bought Ikea - adult size furniture so it will last, though we did spend £50 on a child size toy chest so he can tidy up by himself.

boatrace30 · 31/08/2018 19:38

Ikea for cot and furniture. Got proper adult sized furniture so it will last. Changing mat on top of chest of drawers

Sandstormbrewing · 31/08/2018 20:42

Ikea wardrobe and drawers and a second hand cot (£10 - had only been used a grandparents house so was practically brand new). All white so it matches. Got a second hand cot top changer too - £3! New mattress.

I didn't see the point in specific nursery furniture. Over priced and lasts half as long!

Merename · 31/08/2018 20:47

Everything second hand, gumtree mainly.

Pushandrun · 22/03/2019 21:56

Please. Do not buy Mokee products. They left us without anywhere for our newborn to sleep despite numerous reminders from us and promises from them. We are far from alone - check out all of the one star reviews on trustpilot. They have been promising to change for years. Hands down the worst online shopping experience we have ever had. How on earth can buying a cot and moses basket end up being the most stressful part of our entire pregnancy? So angry!!!

SusanZ · 10/04/2019 12:27

I got some nice toddler furniture from Obique (they have an online store), multifunctional table and chair set but they flip and they turn into coffee tables. Really good for saving space. Our boy loves them and they kept really well since last year, they are made from real wood, beech I believe.

CocoLoco87 · 10/04/2019 12:35

I bought the Obaby Beverley cotbed as it turns into a toddler bed. Liked it so much we bought another one for DC2. Think it was around £120.

We've bought Ikea wardrobes with drawers included. When the DC were very little we found a changing unit & drawers in a charity shop.

We also bought a rocking chair with money a family member gave us. We got a naice one with a rocking footstool etc and that was around £150ish. Still use it, still love it.

Narya · 10/04/2019 12:37

We bought a normal chest of drawers from a local furniture shop and an East Coast Nursery cotbed. I did consider a matching set of nursery furniture but we wanted a natural wood finish and when we were looking, practically everything was white or grey.

DS is 14mo and we haven't needed a wardrobe yet - so if you do want proper matching nursery furniture you could hold off on the wardrobe for now and save up for it.
