Paternity leave

Hi all

Trying to work out when DP should take paternity leave. If he takes it on my due date and baby is 2 weeks late than it would of been wasted. How is everyone working around this issue?

Most employers will say to notify them when you are in labour and that will be day one. Its not as set in stone as mat leave.

Taylor22 · 31/08/2018 00:55

Most employers I know need a definite start and end date.
We went two weeks after my due date as I wanted him around more.
I did only go over by a few days by we were lucky enough that my husband is a manager and therefore controls the rota.
So a lot depends on your own circumstances.

Gov.uk say you can just say you will start it from day of the birth or one week after. Doesn’t sound like you need to give exact date

My husband's work are just letting him leave when he needs to and taking the paternity from when baby is born. Tbh they've been really supportive letting him take me to appointments and scans etc which I'm not sure they have to but I do know you can take it from baby being born rather than due date. Which is good as I'm a week overdue!!

My DH just gave in a copy of my mat 1 B form and then started from the day I had the baby.

DH's employers were quite flexible. He told them by due dates and they worked it out from there. With DS1 I was a week overdue. I was due to be induced anyway at 10 days OD and he said that he would finish that day. I ended up in the hospital a couple of days before that although it was on his days off so didn't change anything.

With DS2, I was due a c-section at 39 weeks so DH booked paternity leave to start then. I ended up in the hospital at 37 weeks and had the section at 38 weeks. DH basically had to ring work and move his leave forward. He used annual leave as well though for the first week I was in hospital before baby arrived.

We just had to give the due date so they have an idea of when then he will leave work when I go into labour.

SoyDora · 31/08/2018 07:10

DH has given a due date but can take it from whenever the baby comes.

My partners work are allowing him to take it when our son is born. They are having a little panic as due 16th of December and he is a chef so right in the middle of Christmas party season

mumofmunchkin · 31/08/2018 09:34

Dh gives his work my due date, but just rings them up when I go into labour/have the baby and starts paternity leave from that date. He's a teacher so he just has two weeks of cover sat on his desk ready for whoever to pick up when he rings in.

MaverickSnoopy · 31/08/2018 10:16

He just tells them that he wants his leave to start on the day you give birth, rather than dates. Employers cannot insist people confirm paternity leave start dates.

Thank you all for your replies! Every one has been extremely helpful.

Like PP he is a Head Chef in a pub with only 2 chefs and an apprentice. He’s going to speak to his manager and see what he says

My DH starred his on the Monday after DS was born on the Wednesday.
We were still in hosp till the Sunday so it made sense. He was also able to pop in before he went to work, at lunch time and was obviously there in the evening.

MissMoodyMoo · 31/08/2018 17:33

I'm having an elective section so my partner will take paternity on the day of the section! Also taking 10 days anual leave as well so will have almost a month off with us! 😊😊

ThorsMistress · 31/08/2018 17:51

DS was born with shoulder distocia so an elective section is available to me. But my consultant said he sees no reason I can’t go naturally. The only benefit of a section is a date!
