Painful hips

Hi
I am 26 weeks and have had painful hips before pregnancy however they now seem to be much worse and I am getting pain all over pelvis and groin as well. Am so frustrated as am on holiday and just can’t do anything without it getting very painful. It is horrendous going up inclines or stairs then I get a sciatica like pain when I have sat for more than twenty mins. To add insult to injury I also can’t sleep on either side for long as it starts to hurt then also! Don’t know quite what the exact point of this post is guess I just wanted to see what other people’s experiences were. I feel like I am slowing husband down a lot and that the holiday we are currently on has been pointless as I feel more stressed because of the pain than I was when we were at home. I am so grateful to be at this stage of pregnancy but am really struggling to cope with constant pain without getting upset and frustrated. I am currently seeing antenatal physio and have had some acupuncture and been doing some stretches but nothing seems to help for long.

Yep I’ve had awful hip pain. I’m 35 weeks and it hasn’t really improved to be honest. Any exercise or walking makes it much worse but sometimes I don’t have much choice.

If they’re hurting at night I tuck my maternity pillow under my bum and sleep on top of it, the bed is too hard.

I did mention it to my midwife and she just said ‘aww yea that happens’.

I may well try putting another pillow under bum sounds worth a go! Hope you are feeling better soon. 😊. Some people seem to breeze through with limited aches and pains I know I am definitely not one of those people lol

Get a maternity support belt for your hips and a maternity pillow. Your physio should be able to help you with this specific issue.

I will see what she says next time I am in for physio. Currently she has mostly been working on my piriformis as it seems very tight. I think I am just finding the constant pain mentally exhausting and am missing being able to take painkillers.

I'm 17 weeks and my hip pain has started been referred to the physio and bought a support pillow, was about to write a post about any tips whilst I wait for physio.....

I'm starting yoga on Sunday in the hope that it may help....

Hi ladies

I have suffered with this too! Firstly at around 16w where the physio gave me a support belt which did help.

I have the same pain and sleeping problem now as you OP. The past few nights ive slept on propped up pillows to lessen the amount of weight on my lower half. This has helped with the pain immensely.

There is no real help if you are walking or moving around, just resting! Good luck guys!

Sounds like SPD. I had it in the later stages of my first pregnancy and have had it from much earlier on this time around. 1st pregnancy my midwife referred me to a physio group session which was a group talk where they demonstrated different things that you can do to help. Some helped last time some didn't - if it had gotten worse I could have then had individual, more traditional physio.

The biggest things that are helping this time is sleeping with a pillow (regular bed pillow, not too flat and not too plump), sandwiched between my knees and ankles - try to also have your ankles in line with your bum when in the fetal position. I still have to swap sides a few times during the night, but during the day pain is much less - I certainly know about it the next day of I don't sleep like this. The other thing is when sitting down try to have your back upright and both feet flat on the floor. I'm currently sat with several pillows behind me on the sofa, with my back pretty straight and feet slightly less than go width apart. The trick is not to spend too long sitting or too long standing - easier said than done!

Oh and if pain is really bad then both paracetamol and ibuprofen are 'safe' in pregnancy. Or for none drug based relief try hot water bottles or the microwave hear oaks when your sitting down.
