Hi everyone. I'm 30+1 and Monday night I started having extreme diarrhea for the whole night and onto Tuesday afternoon. I went into hospital on Tuesday due to pain in my right rib but all blood tests etc were clear so I was sent home with iron tablets and heartburn tablets. However I still have diarrhea. Every time I eat I'm at the toilet and it's at the point now that I'm struggling to sit down with the pain on my anus due to the persistent diarrhea. Anyone else had this?

Do you have low iron? You should have your test results in your notes with the range which you will be under, or it will simply be flagged up as "Low" or "L".

Iron tablets can give some people bad diarrhoea and to avoid it you need to cut down the number of times per day you take them.

Btw A year or so before I was pregnant I had an issue with iron tablets and could only take one per day before bed. However before I got to that stage I had to stop taking them completely for about 4 days.

@BlueBug45 yeah I have low iron that's why I was given iron tablets. However the diarrhea started before I was on the tablets. My midwife told me that iron tablets usually constipate people 😂x

What's in your heartburn tablets? Do they have any form of magnesium?

mumtoone12 · 30/08/2018 18:42

@BlueBug45 ranitidine hun not sure if they have magnesium in them or not

Nope it doesn't contain it.

Only thing you can do is go on a very bland diet e.g. no dairy, no veg and see a GP. Tomorrow make an on the day appointment.

Are they ferrous sulphate by per chance? I was prescribed them a fortnight ago, I took them for 3 days until I had to stop because I felt so ill. It was like I had norovirus! They gave me terrible cramps, nausea and awful diarrhoea (TMI but it was like black water 😷). I switched to ferrous gluconate and the problems disappeared.

You need to speak to your midwife/GP.
When I was pregnant I had what I thought was diarrhoea/ very loose and pale stools. My midwife said it was fine to not eat for 24 hours to try and clear it.
In retrospect though it was a symptom of obstetric cholestasis - I didn't have any itching at all.
Let your midwife know if your stools are pale.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

I was just coming here to ask about this - hope you're feeling better now? Mine started on Monday evening and since then I've had a few bits of toast/banana and not much else and always 2-3 hours later another bout :( I'm thinking of just trying 36 hours without food from today while hubby will be around to look after our kids. I have a GP app on Monday anyway so was going to ask about it then if I shouldn't have called the midwife about it before?!

BlueBug45 · 31/08/2018 09:15

@Rumpleteezer quit the banana and any fruit or vegetable, and just eat biege food for a few days making sure you stay well-hydrated. I would contact your GP over the midwife as doctors can prescribe more things and refer you to more specialists if need be.

BlueBug45 · 31/08/2018 09:17

I forgot to say in lots of areas GPs are jointly responsible for antenatal care and even when they are not you are still there patient, so your GP has no excuse not to help you.

Rumpleteezer · 31/08/2018 09:55

Ahh I thought banana was the safest following the BRAT diet. To be honest I only had that yesterday after 2 previous days on toast with no difference... I will ask the GP on Monday if it's still going then.

I had this last week, literally went on from Monday - Sunday completely out of the blue having never had it during this pregnancy before. Every day. I was getting really worried, saw my GP about something else and mentioned it and she didn't seem to think it was a concern. Rang midwife on the Friday who told me they view diarrhoea as unrelated to pregnancy (okay great). So anyway I cut out dairy cause I heard that might be a trigger and it stopped two days later. Don't know if it was that or just a coincidence. One think I did read though was that our constitutions are much more sensitive when pregnant so it could be a reaction to some food or something and it just takes longer for our system to respond to it? I would keep eating plain food and if you still have it on Monday, go back in

FrowningFlamingo · 01/09/2018 12:29

Bluebug45 you're very insistent that people see a GP for diarrhoea, why? (Genuine question, not trying to be arsey). The OP has already been seen in a&e and had clear blood tests and presumably had obs done. Not sure what visiting the GP would add to that - except spreading the illness to everyone else in the waiting room I suppose. There's nothing helpful that can be prescribed, especially in pregnancy. Antidiarrhoeals are well known for prolonging the illness rather than helping.
If your symptoms are so bad you aren't managing to stay hydrated you need a&e for fluids, if you're generally ok but it goes on longer than 7 days the GP can send a sample.
If you're concerned and want to talk it through please ask your GP for a call back first rather than risk other vulnerable patients - if they feel they need to see you they'll often ask you to come as the last patient of the session.
