36 weeks, does it sound like baby is coming soon?

Hi ladies, was just hoping to hear about some similar experience or just get some opinions!

I had my 36 week midwife appointment yesterday (at 35+6). I mentioned to her that in the last 24 hours my discharge had ramped up considerably and also changed consistency to be much more watery rather than creamy, and asked if it was possible my waters could be leaking. So she gave me a bit of a telling off for not ringing Triage straight away, then rang them for me and sent me off for monitoring at the hospital. Luckily the monitoring was all fine and I still have a happy baby in there (I hadn’t been worried about her movements anyway, but it was still lovely to be reassured). I was examined by a doctor and she said my waters are definitely still intact and it was just crazy discharge which is normal. All a happy outcome, so not really the point of my post!

But some of the other things that came out of yesterday have got my head spinning and I want to know if others have had similar experiences, and if so when did baby arrive?

Firstly, midwife wrote in my notes that we are at 4/5, which I know means 4/5 of the baby’s head can be felt, so 1/5 is engaged. Is this normal for 36 weeks?

Then when on the monitor at the hospital, the midwife said “Can you feel those tightenings?”. I hadn’t been feeling anything, but looking on the graph I was clearly having regular tightenings of the uterus . I asked if they could be Braxton Hicks and she just said “They could be?”

Then when the doctor examined me, she said my cervix was shortened, and that it was uncommon for a first baby to be in such a favourable position for labour at this stage. Also she wrote “1cm” in my notes which I can only imagine means I’m 1cm dilated? Most of what she has written is otherwise illegible which is rather frustrating! She then started saying things like “don’t worry, if you go into labour at 36 weeks we won’t do anything to stop it, most babies do just fine at 36 weeks and don’t need any additional care” which had me spinning a bit.

Finally she said “Everything is fine, you can just carry on with normal midwife care, when are you seeing her again?” so I replied “well I just saw her this morning so it will be 2 weeks today”. She then gave a little laugh and said “oo, I don’t think it will be 2 weeks!”. But when she left the room the midwife was much more conservative, saying things like “You just can’t tell, you could still go overdue but at least it looks favourable if you need a sweep” etc.

So my head is a spinning a bit and I’m feeling a bit shell-shocked today! I’m analysing every little twinge I feel (also I feel a bit betrayed by my uterus that it has been contracting without even letting me know about it!).

I feel a bit daft to feel that way; obviously I knew I was reaching the end and baby was coming soon, but I fully expected to be late as it’s my first. So I’ve gone from thinking I have 4 to 6 weeks left to thinking it might be less than 2 weeks! I don’t even finish work for another week and a half! 36 weeks just seems so early?

So ladies, based on the above, what do you reckon my chances are of going full term? You hear about people being 4cm dilated for weeks, and that babies come whenever they are ready, but all I can think is that the doctor seemed to think it would be soon, and surely doctors know what they’re on about?

If nothing else, just reassure me that it’s normal to start suddenly freaking out a bit about actually having the baby, despite the fact that this was very much planned, very much wanted and we literally have everything ready and in place – I feel so daft!

Hi OP

I'm by no means an expert, but I was the same at 36 weeks and I ended up going to 40+6 Smile

...but definitely hurry up and get your baby stuff together! Smile

Haha yes having a sudden freak out is indeed completely normal. And yours is not based on nothing there - but no way of saying whether the dr was right and it'll be so close or not. That's why due dates are a bit of a problem - some argue that we should have a 'due month' to help us let go of the focus on a date, given only 5% of babies are born on due date and there's such variation around the world on how long a pregnancy lasts.

It's great news that your baby is in a favourable position, and that you are prepared. But no wonder this news has made you feel a bit vulnerable, especially when you've not finished work. When babies arrive is a complete mystery and no one can really say - that's the tension of the end! People keep telling me I'll go early due to my massive bump only, but people like to make predictions and have a pop at being 'right', even drs.

Whatever happens, your body and your baby will work together when the time is right, you can totally do this! If you haven't already, reading some hypnobirthing ideas online could really help boost confidence. Have a lovely labour Flowers

Thank you both for the lovely reassuring responses!

I don't know if it came across from my post but I am still so excited to meet my baby - which is why feeling a bit freaked out by potential labour is so strange to me!

I also have another update - just been to the loo and I'm fairly sure that I'm losing my mucus plug. Had a bit of pink tinged discharge since last night but I thought it was just because I had someone poking my cervix yesterday - now it's clearly a bit more mucusy and brown streaked.

Am I right in thinking that doesn't mean much at this stage, it cane still be a while right? Or is it worth giving midwife a ring?

My baby has been 3/5 palpable since my 36 week appt, I’ve been having loads of tightenings and twinges since then, I’ve lost some of my plug, I’ve been 1cm dilated and approx 50% effaced for weeks. Now 40+1... absolutely no sign of baby any time soon for me! 😂

StarfishSandwich · 29/08/2018 10:11

So in summary, until you are in full blown labour, how long it will take is anyone’s guess!

You’ve likely just got a bit of old blood coming out from the examination, possibly a bit of your plug. No need to ring unless it’s fresh red blood and more than a teaspoon or you have other worries.

Merename · 29/08/2018 10:13

I think it varies...but I was in labour within 12hrs of losing my plug. Any other symptoms like diarrhoea? I think some people lose plug in advance tho, but does sound more likely you're not going full term then. Of course you are excited for your baby, didn't sound otherwise, but just realising that this is actually happening is a big deal!! No harm in ringing your midwife to discuss, would probably help you relax just to have the chat. Ooooh exciting!!

secretnames · 29/08/2018 11:12

i lost my mucus plug at 36+2 and baby was born at 36+4 i had been in work all day got home waters broke went straight up to hospital as had strep b and was already 6cm! he was born 5hours later and weighed 8lb 3!

Teeterhop · 29/08/2018 11:23

Sounds like there are varying experiences from both ends of the spectrum! It really is an unpredictable business isn't it?

Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

I decided to give the midwife a ring anyway (still conscious that they told me off yesterday for not ringing them with my concerns!). She said it all sounds fairly normal to have some pink or brown discharge after a speculum exam. She offered to get me in for an assessment or said I could just keep an eye on things over the next few hours which is what I'm going to do.

I honestly feel physically fine otherwise, baby is kicking about and hiccuping, I'm still as comfortable as anyone can be at 36 weeks pregnant and no other labour symptoms, so happy to see what develops!

Just so weird to think I could possibly be meeting my baby soon!

My first came at 37 weeks, after a 3 hour labour, only having contractions the last hour- 6lb.

SoyDora · 29/08/2018 19:45

Like Annalogy I had very similar things said to me at 36 weeks with DC1... she came at 40+6 after a 48 hour labour! Honestly it’s so unpredictable.
Good luck!
