Im 22wks and really struggling to get comfy at night. At the moment the most comfy position is on my back but propped up with extra pillows. I try and sleep on my side but then i get uncomfortable.

There seem to be so many different opinions about what is the right thing to do. I think im losing sleep worrying about how to sleep!!!

All advice welcome.

Im only 13/14 weeks with my second, and I'm always flat on my back or on my belly. Can't sleep on my side because I like my one knee up pretty much up to my chest which means I'm always kneeing dh in the back.... Or he's way over my side and I have no room but to be as straight as a board!
With my first I slept mostly on my back too, tried on my side with pillows but same problem and it gave me terrible back ache all day from not having a natural spine position. I used to be on my back with a little pillow tucked under one side just to give a little lean.
I didn't stress over it, even less so now, so long as you still feel those kicks and wiggles then all is well.

Your fine on your back till 28 weeks plus!! Sleep however is comfy for you xx

RamonaQuimbyage38 · 28/08/2018 22:04

I have one of those extra long pregnancy pillows (got it from Lidl a few years ago) it's amazing. I lie on on my side kind of wrapped around it. Don't think I could cope with months of side sleeping without it.

But, like PP says, I don't think it's til towards the end that it really matters and even then I don't think it'll harm the baby if you sleep on your back, it's more to do with compressing your internal organs/nerves and making it uncomfortable for you. If you're not uncomfortable, it's probably fine.

Until you are 28 weeks sleep anyway you feel comfortable.

After 28 weeks go to sleep on your side. While the left side is preferred either side will do.

If you then wake up on your back don't panic, just make sure when you go back to sleep again you lay on either side.

There's research to suggest that sleeping on your back reduces blood supply to baby from 19 weeks.
Left side is preferable and I found a pillow between my legs and under my shoulder helped.
It's an uncomfortable time though! I get that!

AussieMum28 · 30/08/2018 20:24

I could have written this post! My shoulders and neck ache from sleeping on my side! I always sleep on my stomach and at 20 weeks, just can't anymore. I have a pregnancy pillow though I'm not a massive fan. Tend to grab a normal pillow and prop it under my tummy so I'm half on my side/tummy. Still don't sleep overly well!

OutPinked · 30/08/2018 20:32

I think it’s slightly earlier than 28 weeks, I’m sure it’s around 24 weeks.

Either way, I’m afraid to say this only worsens Grin. I’m 30+4 and really struggling to get comfortable in general.

Sandstormbrewing · 30/08/2018 21:20

Yeah, I'm a real belly sleeper usually. 17 weeks now and baby is thumping me if I roll on to my belly. But my left is so uncomfortable and I end up with a dead arm!

ThorsMistress · 30/08/2018 22:26

I’m starting to struggle now at 36+4. Currently on my back propped up with pillows. I lie on my sides but find after a certain time my leg really begins to hurt

BridgeFarmKefir · 30/08/2018 23:00

34+4 and I'm struggling too. I seem to have managed a decent couple of nights' sleep (if you ignore getting up every hour or so to pee) by surrounding myself with pillows: one under my bump, an l-shaped one between my legs, one behind me (essentially wedged between me and DH)

The breakthrough was the one behind which seems to stabilise me and stop my hips from being agony and making me turn every 30-mins.

But essentially it's all a bit shite.

unicornchaser · 30/08/2018 23:27

Yeah you still have a few weeks until you shouldn't sleep on your back but I didn't sleep on my side until I had to and really regret it! I am a natural back sleeper and couldn't get comfy on my side. Now I'm nearly 32 weeks and it's hell trying to sleep on my side when I'm already uncomfy in general thanks to the bump. Wish I had preserved earlier when I wasn't so uncomfy generally.

So basically, try to get used to it now as it will only get worse to try and do it later!

mumofmunchkin · 31/08/2018 10:47

I like a cushion tucked under my bump when I'm lying on my side (I'm 21 weeks, with my third though so got a fair bump), and one between my knees if my hips are aching.
