I walk for over an hour every day, to the station and then from the station to work and vice versa. I'm not a speed walker, but I certainly don't hang around!

I'm now 21 weeks into my first pregnancy and whilst I wouldn't say I was fit by any stretch of the imagination, I've started to find this walking very hard work, quite suddenly.

My bump isn't noticable if you don't know I'm pregnant (it seems to start under my boobs and I just look fat, rather than being a tummy bump as I had expected...), but it feels very heavy and a bit painful when I walk. And stairs...?!

Does / did anyone else feel like this and does it go away?

On the plus side, people have been telling me how well and lovely I look over the last few days, even after a nightmare tube journey, so it's not all bad!

Thanks!

I was really fit when I fell pg and struggled to maintain the level because my pubic bone started to come apart at 17 weeks...that coupled with fact that I was heavier, more tired etc. In answer YES!!
I did manage to do BodyBalance twice a week until right before I dropped though so that was a real bonus and helped me keep fit and healthy.

Hi Drury

Sounds normal to me. Don't forget your blood volume shoots up when pregnant and your heart is pumping harder just to supply the bub even when you're resting so anything else you do will seem harder. For me stairs are the worst! I'm just taking things a bit slower.

I'm 20 weeks and have exactly the same sort of bump but believe me, it will get real obvious soon enough . You could try a bump belt or some such if you need a bit more support while you're walking.

I also feel very heavy and slow when walking - and I was quite fit before pregnancy. I think just carrying around the extra weight etc slows you down. Even swimming is more of an effort so I am trying to listen to my body and not push myself. I figure that doing some activity, even gentle, is better than lazing on the sofa eating cakes!

DruryLane · 06/06/2007 09:24

Thanks everyone!

Naturelover, I am trying to keep up with the walking (it's still a better option than the Tube...) but the idea of lying on the sofa eating cake is very appealing!

Pheebe I have seen bump belts advertised. Have you tried one? I am erring towards under-the-bump trousers / skirts as I have always preferred hipsters, so the belts don't appeal that much, but if they help, I will certainly give it a go!

Very keen to get a 'proper' bump - perhaps someone on the Central Line will give me a seat then...?!

I was very fit before pg and vowed to do lots of exercise throughout. First 3 months though all I could do was sleep and puke so now at 15 weeks I'm really unfit. I'm trying not to worry about it and vowing to take what exercise I can. Have a mountain walking holiday in July in Alps planned.. yikes! I think DH will have to pull me up the hills.

Pheebe · 06/06/2007 15:35

Lol Drury, don't hold your breath getting a seat

I used one when I was heavily pregnant with DS but it was september and the weather was pretty cool, it really helped but I can imaging them being hot in the height of summer. still I spose you could wear it while you were walking to n from and take it off for the rest of the time

DruryLane · 06/06/2007 16:23

Hold my breath? I'll have to catch it first!!!

MrsWizz, I'm jealous! Have a wonderful time and remember, you can always use the cable cars instead...!

Yes Drury, I think I'll ham up the pregnancy symptoms and get on the cable cars. Am going to visit uncle and family, usually a bit of a boot camp mentality as far as family walks are concerned.

DruryLane · 07/06/2007 13:17

Yay!!!

On the way home last night, a very nice man on a packed Central Line train gave me his seat!

Yesterday my ankles disappeared, so he either spotted them (or the lack of them) or the skirt/top combo I chose yesterday did the trick, finally!

And DH collected me from the station in the car. So my good intentions to keep walking despite the discomfort came to nothing yesterday in the face of sheer laziness and tiredness!
