15 weeks and red bull?

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 17:50

Im 15 weeks pregnant and honestly have been craving a red bull sooooooo bad lately!

Once i found out i was pregnant, which was 4 weeks, i stopped drinking red bull altogether

But the craving is just awful, what i would do for a ice cold red bull right now!

Soooo did anyone drink any energy drinks whilst they were expecting?

I dont know wether it's recommended or not, hence why i stopped drinking it as soon as i found out, but honestly this craving is unbearable Blush

I think it's the caffeine content which makes them not recommended. One might be fine, but it can be a slippery slope. The high sugar content is also bad news...

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 17:58

I know physicskate hence why i wont touch one, even if i say ill only have a few sips i know i would end up finishing the whole can!

Thats why im doing my best to keep away

Well, a can of red bull has 80mg of caffeine per can and you should have no more that 200mg of caffeine a day, so 1 or 2 cans should be fine as long as you don't have anything else containing caffeine - cola, tea, coffee, chocolate etc.

However you aren't recommended to have more than 3mg of taurine per day (pregnant or otherwise) and one can of rd bull has 1mg of taurine in it, so 1 can, plus your usual diet would likely be that limit.

Personally I wouldn't but that's partially because caffeine causes havoc with my bladder when pregnant.

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 18:21

Sandstormbrewing thats some really good advice, thanks.

It's not recommended for children or pregnant women.

It says as much on the can.

lolacola13 · 27/08/2018 19:53

I had a half a tin every now and then when preg with dd... I don't drink tea or coffee so was desperate on days where I didn't sleep until 4am and was up for some school run at 7am... a few sips will do no harm . Just make sure u don't have and yes or coffee that day

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/08/2018 19:59

I suffer terribly with migraines and got them a lot when I was pregnant. I couldn't take my usual medication or ibuprofen so my doctor told me to take paracetamol with a can of red bull ( caffeine counteracts the the migraine symptoms ) I didn't do it often but the occasional one didn't seem to do any harm.

lolacola13 · 27/08/2018 20:02

@BlaaBlaaBlaa interesting I was told that too I suffer horrendously with them they have eased slightly im 7 weeks. Not allowed the usual triptans and what not

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 20:07

Thats very interesting in regards to the Migraines, as ive started suffering headaches alot lately!

Kelsoooo yep i know what it says on the can, i didnt want to say i am going to drink it, i just said ive got a craving for it

If I feel one coming on now I try with painkillers and red bull before the migraine medication. It can sometimes stop them before they've started.

I don't drink any other caffeine so didn't feel bad drinking red bull occasionally.

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 20:12

BlaaBlaaBlaa so it actually helps then?

I honestly never even knew that, but if the Doctors recommended it then theres no harm in having it

CrabbyPatty · 27/08/2018 20:13

Don't mean to be preachy but maybe this is a good time to override your cravings and keep going without. Red bull (like all caffeinated drinks) is addictive.

Sandstormbrewing · 27/08/2018 20:16

NotTellingAnyoneYet When doctors advise something, it isn't because there isn't any harm, but because the benefits of doing it outweigh the risk of not doing it, or outweigh the risk of alternative treatment and is a decision they make based on the history of the patient and their medical knowledge.

I'm not saying red bull IS ok, or IS NOT ok, but you can't assume because a doctor said it was ok for one person, it'd be ok for another!

NotTellingAnyoneYet · 27/08/2018 20:23

CrabbyPatty & Sandstormbrewing as ive said in my previous posts, i do not want to drink red bull, i just have a craving which i know will soon pass.

I used to enjoy a can every other day, but when i found out i was pregnant at 4 Weeks I completely stopped, didnt even have a sip and do not plan to whilst im still pregnant.

I was just interested in knowing if anyone did drink energy drinks while expecting, and in regards to the previous posters doctor recommending it, just because it might be good for her it might not be good for me, i was just interested in regards to the red bull over riding migranes

There is a poor lady in my work who suffers horrifically takes a double shot espresso and two paracetamol says it's as good as migraine meds. I feel this thread is wandering off topic lol. OP if the craving is that strong knock your socks off and have half a tin and enjoy . Hosea sake there's women out there literally injesting coal and fire lighters .

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/08/2018 20:37

It helps migraines but not necessarily general headaches. Although it can work for tension headaches. A migraine causes your blood vessels to expand where as caffeine narrows them. Many headache/migraine medications contains caffeine for this reason.

I get aura migraines so can usually tell when I'm about to get one. I have been able to prevent a full blown attack with painkillers and caffeine. Not always though!

polkadotpixie · 28/08/2018 10:39

I also suffer with migraines and caffeine helps if I have it early enough in an attack so espresso or Diet Coke for me. Paracetamol does absolutely nothing for me so I don't even bother

I've not drank energy drinks during my pregnancy but I would definitely have the odd one here and there if I fancied one. The caffeine is less than the daily recommended limit and I still drink Diet Coke so I can't see an issue as long as it's in moderation

OutPinked · 28/08/2018 10:57

They have been banned for under 16’s for a good reason. They also have a warning on the side not to drink when pregnant for a good reason.

I’ve never drank one, don’t see the appeal. 200mg of caffeine is fine but red bull has a lot of other shite in it too.

Fluffybat · 28/08/2018 10:57

Surely it's not that different to drinking coffee? As long as you stay in the recommended mg. I have one coffee and one coke most days. Did in first pregnancy too. 😊

Sandstormbrewing · 28/08/2018 12:04

They have been banned for under 16’s for a good reason only because they are easier to get hold of and drink than strong coffee. If starbucks was available at the corner shop and as filled with sugar as redbull they'd likely ban that too.

Personally don't like the taste of redbull, or any energy drink I've had but it's not like OP is suggesting she smokes weed once a week!
