Very easy to Google ...

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

Mayonnaise
Prawns
Any seafood
Pate
Soft boiled eggs
Meringue
Liver
Anything with vitamin A
Anything with caffeine
Rare meat

welshweasel · 27/08/2018 16:35

Mayonnaise, prawns, seafood (cooked), soft boiled eggs, meringue all fine. I suggest you read the nhs advice linked to above!!

FuckMyUterus · 27/08/2018 16:40

Please don't avoid anything at all with vitamin A in.

Read up on safe daily amounts and make sure you're not exceeding them. I've recently found out my baby's kidneys haven't formed correctly and the reason is most likely because I avoided all forms of Vitamin A in early pregnancy.

Celebelly · 27/08/2018 16:42

Mayonnaise is fine. The only risk is fresh mayonnaise, which isn't the stuff you get in the bottles. Soft/runny eggs are fine if they're Lion stamped. Just follow the NHS guidelines as there's a lot of false and outdated info around!

Celebelly · 27/08/2018 16:43

Also caffeine is fine within limits, certain fish is actually recommended. Come on, people, don't post false information.

Celebelly · 27/08/2018 16:44

Cross-posted with @welshweasel there - got distracted while writing post!

eurochick · 27/08/2018 16:47

Just follow the nhs guidance. You don't need to avoid all of the things listed above.

Nothisispatrick · 27/08/2018 16:50

NHS guidelines are very clear and easy to follow. Please don’t worry yourself following ridiculous advice from randoms on the Internet. The egg advice is very outdated.

Sandstormbrewing · 27/08/2018 18:38

Mayonnaise is fine

It really is, unless it's fresh made stuff, which you only find in very posh restaurants! Stuff from a jar is totally fine!

Sandstormbrewing · 27/08/2018 18:41

PLEASE ignore the advice by lovemyhorsesxo it is WRONG!

brokenharbour · 27/08/2018 18:43

Educate yourself and make your own decisions. People will have stupid ideas about what you can't eat. A colleague told me I shouldn't be eating sushi. The midwife told me to avoid smoked salmon. NHS guidelines are clear so follow them if you're worried. Personally I try not to eat too much fish and don't eat liver or pate. Pretty much everything else seems like fair game if you read up on the reasons behind it (some of which don't make much sense.)

OP Google says avoid everything because you are getting information from the US, Australia, New Zealand etc where each country has different food safety standards.

The best link to follow is the NHS one as it is based on British food safety standards.

Oh and definitely ignore lovemyhorsesxo post as it is completely incorrect for the UK.

Nothisispatrick · 27/08/2018 21:05

Google the NHS advice, not just random websites. Fish is fine, eggs are fine. I can’t think of any fruit you need to avoid?

BlueBug45 · 27/08/2018 21:10

@Nothisispatrick some fish you need to avoid or ensure you don't eat loads of due to their mercury/pollutant level.

delilahbucket · 27/08/2018 21:16

Only things I avoided were alcohol, liver and pate. Only reason to avoid nuts or shellfish is if there is a family history of allergies. Read up on the NHS guidelines and make your own decisions. It's also sensible to take a prevnancy multi vitamin.

Merename · 27/08/2018 21:20

OP, the soft boiled egg advice has recently changed. Soft eggs are now considered fine as long as the eggs have the usual kite mark stamp. Hooray!

SleepyMcEdie · 27/08/2018 21:20

Fish is fine, even smoked salmon is fine.

Only things to avoid really are soft mound ripen cheese like Brie and Camembert, dry cured meats unless they are frozen first, liver and pate.

Nothisispatrick · 27/08/2018 21:34

BlueBug45

Yes but it’s verh few. Was easily doable for me as they weren’t fish I would eat anyway (shark?!).

Again, very easy to follow and easy to find the advice on the nhs website.

Annalogy · 27/08/2018 21:43

Google is your friend with this one Smile

I didn't even know that you weren't allowed to eat prawns? Whoops!

SophieStripe · 27/08/2018 21:49

You are allowed to eat prawns. Point made I think! Look at NHS website and NHS website only!!

Frazzled2207 · 27/08/2018 22:27

Cooked prawns fine. Avoid raw shellfish, not that we eat much of that here.
