Im 19 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Im planning on BF but after seeing a lot of posts and hearing others say they weren't able to BF, im wondering if I should buy the bottles and equipment 'just in case' ? What happens if I cant BF and I don't have any back up?

I chose not to get anything in as a back up. I think formula in the early days can have a real impact on supply when all you need to be doing is feeding feeding feeding.

It is tough to start with but if it doesn't work out you'll be able to pop to a supermarket. You could always get some of those ready made bottles with teats attached to save the outlay on bottles if you don't have a store nearby.

Good luck with it. It's worth it in the end!

There's no need really. It'll just make it easier to 'give up' during the hardest part which is the first few days while your milk comes in and baby will be on you constantly day and night. If you really do need bottles, shops will be open.

Nope honestly don't waste the money.

If you need anything once home from hosp a lot of shops are open 24/7 and in hosp formula will always be provided when required for even breast fed babies.

Worth checking if you have a Le Lech League group, local FB group or breast feeding cafe nearby for support in person or by phone / online etc.

Your milk can take a few days to come in so don't worry if it takes a while to get going but colostrum is needed in such small amounts.

Honestly your best ensuring you have a fantastic support network around you and knowing where you can turn to if you have any concerns Blush

Oops sorry, it kept saying post not successful; wasn't trying to make quadruple the point!

There's no need to buy now. Supermarkets are open all hours now if you need to at the time. I did have a couple of bottles and ready made cartons as a back up, but thankfully ds took to bfing with gusto approx 37 seconds after he was born and is still going at it now, nearly 3 years later. Hope it works out for you!

Littlebees · 27/08/2018 17:47

Thanks for the advice. I'll skip buying anything in that case. Really hope I can do it!

I bought some of the pre-made sterile bottles (that come with disposable sterile teats). They were great for us as DS had one while I was in theatre after the birth and the first week or so while I was recovering DH would give him a bottle now and then so I could sleep. After that I breastfed exclusively until 6 months and still bf now and DS is 15months. There's no harm in it and you may just appreciate the break!

Jeippinghmip · 27/08/2018 17:55

I breastfed all three of my DC and never had a bottle in the house. It was hard going with my first but I persevered. I feel proud that I managed to feed them myself, it’s very rewarding.

Locate your nearest 24 hour supermarket, take DP there and explain EXACTLY what he would need to buy, whatsapp him photos and quantities in a group specifically called "formula stuff" or similar.

Then if you need it, send him out!

To give another perspective, my DD was tongue tied and it wasn't picked up in hospital.
At 2 in the morning when I couldn't get her to latch and she was loosing her mind from hunger I would have really appreciated at least a back up plan.
FYI- we got her tt cut at day 6- and she was ebf from that point until weaning. It never interferes with my supply and she didn't have nipple confusion.
Just my personal story.

Jeipping. Blimey on every single bf post there has to be one.
Managed to not have a bottle in the house* blimey do you want a medal. Because of course you wouldn't want to have bottles in the house - the spawn of the devil! You give breastfeeding mums a bad name. You didn't need to put it like this. God forbid she's think of a plan b in case it went tits up!!!
