Telling work... when? How? What did you do?

My boss is very old school but also very by the book. Although she is a woman she is so intimidating and treats employees as numbers. She won't be happy I'm pregnant.
I feel like if I put it in writing in an email she will want to meet me face to face and patronise me for not just speaking to her and vice versa if I tell her face to face.
What is the standard?
I feel I should know this as it's dc3 but my first in this job. I've been here nearly 2 years and she isn't the most approachable person.

I would tell her face to face after the 12-13 week scan. That's pretty much the standard I think (unless you are showing very early or there's a health complication that will make it obvious before then).

I told Work at 8 weeks, (early scan then determined I was 6 weeks) I work for the emergency services and I had a previous MC so thought it was wise to be safe. My boss is quite intimidating and you get judged for going on light duties but The last couple of weeks, I’ve felt very ill and had to take 2 days sick. I honestly don’t know how people keep it a secret, I feel like I’m going to vomit 24/7!!

What would be the negative in telling your work? X

@Wordie did you do face to face as well? Sorry you're feeling so sick..
She has really strong feelings about everybody and everything and it's always I'm not paying for this and I'm not paying for that. She's just very negative as a person and judgemental. So much so that I'm going to be spending my mat leave looking for another job.
I think I'm just dreading it.

I did it over the phone, as I was on nights, so didn’t see her at work. I had already told my line manager that morning, so I was rushing to tell her on the phone, so she didn’t find out from someone else and sulk! (She’s a 50 year old woman, who sulks! 🙄)

I’m just so bored already, stuck in an office. I’m going to ask tomorrow if I can be moved to a different position, I can not spend the next 7 months tidying up and finding little jobs to keep busy!!

I wouldn’t worry too much about what she’ll say, she has to be nice about it. Plus, if she treats everyone like a number, I’d probably take pleasure in pissing her off a little!!

I told my manager face to face, think I said something like,

'Sorry to bother you but I'm going to need a couple of hours off on X day, I've got my first appointment with the midwife'

And just let her take it from there Smile
