Who wants to babysit DS so I can have a nap?

What's GTT?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/06/2007 15:08

Glucose tolerance test?

cupcake78 · 05/06/2007 15:18

Have also had this today and feeling shattered. Thought it was just me

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/06/2007 15:21

I didn't have the GTT done in this or the previous pregnancy, went straight on to regular finger pricking to test for blood sugars. I did have the GTT though in my first pg and it was vile.

Elasticwoman · 05/06/2007 15:54

What on earth is the GTT for? Surely you'd know if you were intolerant to glucose? Don't think I ever had it. Though I did need a nap every afternoon when pg with No 3.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/06/2007 15:59

It's not intolerance to glucose of the "allergy" type, rather how your pancreas responds to glucose in pregnancy. You fast for a few hours, then have bloods taken, then a disgustingly sweet syrup, then more bloods 2 hours later. The surge in glucose should remain within certain limits, if not you're more likely to develop gestational diabetes (big babies, difficult delivery etc) which in most cases disappears after the pregnancy (but may come back again at some stage). The GTT can be done if a random blood sugar (tested in the set of bloods routinely taken at one of the first appointments) is higher than normal. So not all women have the GTT done.

Yes just as Christina says. I had a big baby last time (10lbs) although GTT was negative then.

Have to wait 1-2 weeks for result. Really hoping it's negative as I want a home birth.

Altogether pretty vile and feeling very washed out.

Hi Ceolas - my firsborn Ds was also big although I only had borderline GDM in that pg. With my DD I had GDM managed with diet alone. She was of average size, not too big (3.5 kg at 38 weeks, born by CS).

I don't think having GDM would automatically "disqualify" you from a home birth, especially if the baby isn't too big, but you may be at higher risk. DD developed respiratory distress syndrome and was in NICU for 2 weeks, the first few days on a ventilator. Some of the theory behind RDS is that insulin prevents good surfactant production and her lungs weren't mature enough. She's all fine now but it was a worrying start. I don't mean to scare you, but better you should know some of the risks you may be taking, apart from the delivery itself. RDS started with "grunting" within a couple of hours of the birth, so a good midwife would pick up on that and transfer to hospital if needed. Good luck, I hope the results come back negative, it's much simpler without GDM.
